Sc<strong>al</strong>loped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini)<br />

Distribution: Worldwide, warm temperate to tropic<strong>al</strong> regions.<br />

Habitat: Inshore and offshore. Mostly taken in coast<strong>al</strong> and pelagic fisheries.<br />

Pector<strong>al</strong> fin description<br />

The dors<strong>al</strong> surface is light brown<br />

or greyish-brown in color with a<br />

dull, smooth texture. The fin is<br />

gener<strong>al</strong>ly short and broad from<br />

leading edge to trailing edge and<br />

is a narowly rounded at the apex.<br />

Dark patch is visible on the<br />

ventr<strong>al</strong> surface, concentrated at<br />

the apex.<br />

Similar Species: Blacktip, spinner and white shark pector<strong>al</strong> fins <strong>al</strong>so have a dark patch concentrated at the<br />

apex on the ventr<strong>al</strong> side, but are not as short from the base to the apex or as broad from leading edge to<br />

trailing edge as the sc<strong>al</strong>loped hammerhead. Smooth hammerhead pector<strong>al</strong> fins are similar in shape and<br />

color, but lack the dark patch concentrated at the apex on the ventr<strong>al</strong> surface.<br />
