Night shark (Carcharhinus signatus)<br />

Distribution: Widely distributed in warm temperate to tropic<strong>al</strong> regions.<br />

Habitat: Primarily offshore. Mostly taken in pelagic fisheries.<br />

<strong>Fi</strong>rst dors<strong>al</strong> fin description<br />

- <strong>Fi</strong>n is light grey to greyishbrown<br />

in color.<br />

- <strong>Fi</strong>n is narrowly rounded at<br />

apex and has convex trailing<br />

edge.<br />

- Smooth texture with sm<strong>al</strong>l<br />

denticles.<br />

- Moderately long free rear tip.<br />

Similar species: Silky shark first dors<strong>al</strong> fins are similar in color and shape, but they have a more<br />

rounded apex. Blue shark first dors<strong>al</strong> fins are similar in shape, but are dark grey or greyish-brown in<br />

color. Bignose shark first dors<strong>al</strong> fins (not included in this guide due to lack of sufficient samples for<br />

further comparison) are extremely similar in shape and color.<br />
