Sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus)<br />

Distribution: Widely distributed in warm temperate regions (absent in the North Pacific).<br />

Habitat: Coast<strong>al</strong> and estuarine. Mostly taken in coast<strong>al</strong> fisheries.<br />

Pector<strong>al</strong> fin description<br />

Dors<strong>al</strong> surface is light brown<br />

to golden brown in color. No<br />

markings on ventr<strong>al</strong> surface.<br />

Sm<strong>al</strong>l denticles with a coarse,<br />

sandpaper-like texture. Short<br />

and broad from leading edge<br />

to trailing edge, rounded at<br />

apex and <strong>al</strong>ong trailing edge.<br />

Broad, rounded free rear tip.<br />

Similar species: Nurse shark pector<strong>al</strong> fins are similar in shape and color, but have large dark and<br />

white denticles visible on both dors<strong>al</strong> and ventr<strong>al</strong> surfaces and a smoother texture than sand tiger<br />

shark pector<strong>al</strong> fins.<br />
