There were also special bathing traditions with their own<br />
unique protocol. These special bathing rituals had names<br />
such at: the Bride’s, the Circumcision, the Groom’s, Offto-the-Army,<br />
and others. As you can see, the hamam<br />
experience is intricately woven into Turkish culture and<br />
though not surrounded by as much pomp and ceremony as<br />
before, many Turks continue to make it a regular part of<br />
their lives.<br />
Hamams in Ankara<br />
Turkish Hamams have an important place both in Turkish<br />
history and in the daily life of Turks. Hamams built<br />
throughout the country are of architectural and historical<br />
value today. They have attracted the attention of visitors to<br />
Anatolia since the Ottoman period and have been a source<br />
of inspiration to artists whose masterworks are still exhibited<br />
in famous museums abroad. Hamams have separate rooms<br />
for men and women. Hamams are not only used for bathing<br />
but also play a role in various Turkish rituals. During the<br />
Ottoman period the women would eye the young girls in the<br />
hamam, looking for bride candidates for their sons. Although<br />
this is no longer in case, hamams still offer a welcome<br />
respite from the stresses of everyday life.<br />
Going to a hamam is a great experience and a superb<br />
introduction into a traditional Turkish custom. Who knows,<br />
