Junior League of Minneapolis . . . 1998-99 Adopt a Child Care Challenge secures and donates 75,000 items to assist the start-up of new in-home child care providers. This welfare to work initiative is the JLM’s 75th anniversary gift to the community. 2000-06 Winter Market, an annual fundraiser, features premier shopping from unique vendors across the country as well as events like celebrity chef demonstrations. 2001-present Starting out as part of Winter Market, the American Girl Fashion Show fundraiser proves so popular it becomes its own annual event. Local girls ages 5-12 showcase the historical and current offerings from the American Girl collection. 1998 1999 2000 2001 1999-2005 JLM works with the American Society of Interior Designers ShowCase Home and the Junior League of St. Paul to provide tours of redesigned homes as a fundraiser each spring. 2000-05 2001 Purchased new headquarters building in Golden Valley. JLM members serve as workshop leaders, teaching an established life skills curriculum to young mothers enrolled in the Division of Indian Work’s Teen Parents Program. 2001-07 Starting out called Leader Within, this leadership development program for girls ages 13-18 ends its six-year lifespan called 3D: Dine, Dish, Discover. Pairing JLM members with young girls, the curriculum covers team building, leadership, creativity and group process skills. 8 |
Celebrating the past; celebrating the present; celebrating the future; celebrating our women 2002-present JLM begins partnering with The Wallin Foundation, instituted in 1991 by Maxine and Winston Wallin to encourage and support girls in Minneapolis public high schools who might otherwise not attend or graduate from college. Through Wallin, JLM offers a scholarship each year to a high school senior who exhibits both academic and volunteer excellence. The scholarship continues for each year of attendance at a Minnesota college or university. 2004-present Books 4 Kids collects and donates books to give to children from lowerincome families, working through agencies and public schools. Starting its fi rst year with 30,000 books donated, it continues to grow each year, including spinning off a reading program in 2009. 2008-present JLM launches Kids in the Kitchen after piloting it via Helping Hands. An Association of Junior Leagues International project done by many other Leagues, the project focuses on kids and healthy eating. 2002 2004 2006 2008 2003 Junior League of Minneapolis, along with Junior League of St. Paul, launches a collaborative cookbook, Always Superb, as a fundraiser. 2003-09 JLM mentors, along with others from the community, serve as role models for St. Louis Park Junior High School girls through Breakfast Buddies. 2005 The JLM and the Minnesota Center for Photography bring The Girl Culture exhibit to Minneapolis, featuring the provocative work of international photographer Lauren Greenfi eld. The work explores how the body has become a primary expression of individuality for females with the goal of raising awareness of issues such as self-esteem, eating disorders, peer pressure, depression and the affect of media messages. 2008 JLM moves to a new location, The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, as it celebrates 85 years. | 9
