B3404. Master of Death:
The Lifeless Art of Pierre
Remiet, Illuminator by
Michael Camille. 1996.
7.75"x10.25". Hardcover
$70.00. SALE $24.98
This remarkable,
well-illustrated
history of “death in miniature”
explores the life and death of a single medieval
artist, a society’s obsession with the macabre, and
the relation between mortality and image-making
itself. Discusses how the medieval world perceived
death as larger than life — that death was implicit
at birth and stretched beyond the end of life to the
resurrection of the body at the Last Judgment. The
story and prose are engaging, though it is a book
best for those already fascinated about the subject.
32 color, and many more black & white, illustrations.
MEDIEVAL ART
While these are college textbooks, they are excellent
overviews, profusely illustrated and written for the
general reader, not for art history scholars. Each covers
architecture, sculpture, painting and the illuminations
in books. The visual arts are treated as part of
a larger world, in which geography, politics, religion,
economics, philosophy, social life are components of
a vibrant and cultural landscape. Limited stock. (Art
Society for Creative Anachronism
We had the pleasure of setting up our shop at a Society
for Creative Anachronism (SCA) event this summer.
Unfortunately, we do not have any photos of Adam,
Michael and John in their medieval garb, but it was
great fun. Our illumination books were a hit, and the
members appreciated the sale prices on many. The illumination
sale books are all collected on the JNB website:
For those interested in original sources on Medieval &
Renaissance materials and techniques, here is a link to
