Calligraphy & Calligraphers
Forsyth
B3016. Scripsit: Pens & Protocol:
The Calligraphy of Official
Washington. 2008. 44pp. 8.5"x11".
Paper $28.00
This full-color journal is a delight.
We get both the visual delight of the
many examples and the sharing of
how it comes to be. First is the work
of the official calligraphers of the
White House (Pat Blair, Debra Brown, Rick Muffler) and
the State Department (Jennifer Nicholason) – menus,
place cards, invitations and the like in script and in
italic. David Hobbs, Sammy Little, Mary Lou O’Brian
and Marta Legeckis then give us insight into their
calligraphic business with the government agencies as
they share many examples of that social calligraphy and
awards work. Finally, we are treated to a full seven pages
of exquisite lettering by Julian Waters.
B2383. Rudolf Koch: Letterer Type
Designer Teacher by Gerald
Cinamon. Forward by Hermann
Zapf. 2000. 208pp. 8.5"x11.25".
Hardcover $49.95. Sale $24.95
Hundreds of examples of
Koch’s lettering,
manuscript books, woodcuts,
fonts and type designs illustrate
this wide ranging presentation of his life and work.
A visual feast and a must-have for those studying
blackletter. B&W illustrations.
B900. Words of Risk: The Art
of Thomas Ingmire by
Michael Gullick. 1989. 90pp.
65 illus., many in full color.
9"x12". Paper $25.
JNB $16.99
Using words as subjects,
Ingmire’s work has progressed
from the transcription
of texts to complex
multi-layered visual statements. His juxtaposition of
and interplay between words & images challenges
the traditional role of calligraphy as “decorated
writing.” The book describes the work & working
process of Ingmire and reproduces virtually all of
his major pieces, many in full color.
B3329. Applied Calligraphy
& Graphic Design by Marco
Campedelli. 2010. 252pp.
8.75"x8.75". Paper $39.00.
JNB Price $34.95
A wide-ranging
selection of graphic
design that features calligraphy and lettering.
Includes packaging, fashion, publishing and
advertising. The 28 lettering artists are primarily
from Europe and little known in the USA. Full color
throughout. Quickly sold out at Odyssey.
B3330. Calligraffiti: The Graphic
Art of Niels Shoe Meulman by
Niels Shoe Meulman and Adam
Eeuwens. 2010. 144pp.
9.25"x9.25". Hardcover $29.95
Before Dutch calligrapher
Niels Meulman
started writing on paper, he had already gained
fame as a graffiti artist. The book's title lets you
know that many of the pieces in the book blend
calligraphy and graffiti with bold strokes and
splattered or dripping ink. Other pieces are drawn
and tightly rendered lettering. Each spread offers
two contrasting visuals that interact with each other.
These interplays include such concepts as idea/
execution, rise/fall, observe/imagine, and destroy/
create. Both the text and the lettering are used to
illuminate the concept.
B2823. Elizabeth I: Her Life in
Letters by Felix Pryor. 2003. 144pp.
9"x11.75 ". Hardcover $34.95.
JNB $17.50
This volume reproduces
sixty letters in full color.
The letters by Elizabeth are in her
italic hand, which changes over the years. Other
letters are to Elizabeth from her subjects and from
foreign princes, kings, queens and czars. Some of
the letters are written out by scribes, others are by
the hand of the correspondent. Each letter is
discussed individually, placing the document in its
historical context. Selected parts of each are
transcribed or, where necessary, translated. A
fascinating combination of handwriting, calligraphy
and English history.
