The boys varsity soccer team won the NAC FOR THE EIGHTH YEAR IN A 

ROW. The boys also had an undefeated season with 13 wins and 1 tie.

If you have a child that is new to the school district and would like to 

register for the 2011-2012 school year, please contact the school on 

or after the date listed below. If you have questions in the interim,

SCHOOL FEES 

The fee for each grade level or course remains the same as previous 

years. Fees are established by the Board of Education and cover only 

partial costs of consumable materials used by a student. Student fees 

are listed below: maximum fee for families, grades K-8 will be $50.00. 

Student fees should be paid prior to September 30, 2011. ALL SCHOOL 

FEES WILL BE WAIVED FOR STUDENTS WHO SIGN UP AND QUALIFY FOR THE 

FREE OR REDUCED PRICE BREAKFAST/LUNCH PROGRAM.

Alternative bus requests will become effective up to 48 hours 

after the form is filed with the transportation office and approved 

by the building principal. Students are allowed one pickup and one 

drop off location. The pickup location may be different than the 

drop off location. Routes for the 2011-2012 school year will be posted

Joseph Badger Food Service 

Beginning with the 2011-2012 school year the Child Nutrition Reauthorization 

Section 205 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 – Equity in School 

Lunch Pricing is now requiring schools to charge an average lunch price equal to 

or more than the difference between the reimbursement for a free and paid lunch. 

In other words, the federal government is requiring all school districts to raise 

lunch prices. This increase in breakfast/lunch pricing is federally driven 

not driven by local school districts throughout the country.

academically, are well behaved and make fewer visits to the nurse. All 

students receive free breakfast during OAT/OGT testing. Cereal or 

cereal bar and yogurt or the hot menu item is offered daily along with milk and 

a choice of fruit or juice. 

CAFETERIA ACCOUNTS 

Students are requested to prepay for meals and the school continues 

to allow any student to charge up to $10.00. Payments may be made by 

mail, placed in a payment box located across from the principals’ office and in 

the cafeteria, and ONLINE at www.mynutrikids.com. Remember to include 

student’s name and account number on all payments. 

The Joseph Badger Cafeteria will continue to utilize NutriKids Point of Sale 

Software. Parents will be able to view a 30 day purchase history, check 

account balance, and set up low balance email notifications free of charge. 

Secure online payment processing is handled by PayPal. NutriKids will charge 

a convenience fee of $1.75 per payment. Visit our website for enrollment 

instructions. 

FREE AND REDUCED BREAKFAST/Lunch 

Free and reduced lunch applications are accepted throughout the school year and 

must be completed each school year. Applications are available on our 

website, www.joseph-badger.k12.oh.us, at each school office and at the end of 

this calendar. Income guidelines are also included with the application. Children 

who are in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, food stamps) 

or the Ohio Works First Program (OWF) are eligible for free breakfast and lunch 

although; you must submit a free and reduced application. Applications are due 

by September 16, 2011. Students in the Free and Reduced Program this past 

school year will remain in the program on a temporary basis until September 23, 

2011, at which time they will be charged regular prices. Applications are 

accepted any time during the school year should your income change. You may 

call Carol Johnson, Food Service Director, at 330.876.2810 if you have any 

questions or need assistance completing the form. Students approved for free 

and reduced meals will have all school fees waived for the 2011 – 2012 

school year. 

NUTRITION 

Serving nutritional meals is a priority for Badger Food Service, which was 

confirmed by the ODE review in 2010. For example we serve whole grain 

breads, steamed vegetables without added butter or salt, and fresh vegetables 

daily. This coming year there will be changes to the ala carte and vending 

selections to reflect more nutritional offerings.

P.A.M.—Online Grades 

JOSEPH BADGER BOARD OF EDUCATION 2011 

BHS and BMS parents continue to 

have access to a online grade system 

called P.A.M. (Parent Assist Module). This system allows parents access 

to student information (grades) via the Internet. We believe that this 

communication tool has provided a valuable link between home and 

school and will increase parents’ awareness concerning the academic 

progress of their children. Teachers and parents can now work together 

to ensure the success of all students. If you have not received a 

username/password please contact your child’s guidance counselor. 

Parents of fifth graders will receive a username and password at 

orientation, August 18, 2011. 

Credit Flex—Joseph Badger Board of Education Policy #811.10 

The Joseph Badger Board of Education recognizes that an effective 

educational program is one that provides opportunities for students to 

customize aspects of their learning around their respective needs and 

interests. Credit Flexibility is one method to motivate and improve 

student learning by allowing access to an increased number of resources, 

customization of individual students needs and the use of multiple 

measures of learning. Credit flexibility shifts the focus from traditional 

“seat time” learning to learning by/from performance. 

Students can earn units of high school credit based on a individually 

approved credit flexibility plan. The intent of credit flexibility is to meet 

increased expectations for high school graduation in response to 

globalization, technology and demographics due to family mobilization. 

21st century skills require students to be culturally diversified thus a 

knowledge base can be achieved through completing traditional 

coursework, testing out or showing mastery of course content, pursuing 

educational option(s) and/or individually approved options or any 

combination of the forementioned. This policy is in accordance with 

O.R.C. 3313.60.

Regular meetings of the Board of Education are held on the third 

Wednesday of each month in the Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. (June/July/ 

August meetings begin at 5:00 p.m.). Special Meetings are scheduled 

as needed. The time and location of all Special Board meetings are 

announced to the media at least 24 hours in advance. 

All Board of Education meetings are open to the public. Individual 

concerns should be handled through proper administrative channels, 

with the Board acting as a source of appeal beyond the level of 

Superintendent. Executive sessions, as permitted by law, are closed to 

the public. 

2010-2011 RETIREMENTS 

With the end of the 2010-2011 school year, the Joseph Badger School 

District said goodbye to Mrs. Judy Barnett (BES Teacher), Mrs. Ann 

Betts (BHS Teacher), Mrs. Jan Calenda (BES Teacher), Mrs. Linda 

Falatic (BES Teacher), and Linda Border (Cook) due to retirement. We 

wish them the best as they begin a new chapter in their lives.

EXPLORE Test Results: 2010-2011

BHS Basketball 

Explore test results are reviewed individually with all 

eighth grade students at Badger Middle School. 

Students’ scores are reflective of their progress in English, Math, 

Science and Social Studies. The tests also look at college readiness, 

plans after high school and career possibilities. It is never too early to 

begin the discussions of career(s) and to begin the exploration process 

of the ever changing work world. Each student is given the score 

sheet, test copy and “using Your EXPLORE Results” booklet to take 

home. If your son/daughter is an eighth grader, please go through 

these results together and discuss potential career options. Badger 

Middle School was selected to take part in this testing through the 

Eastern Ohio P-16 Partnership for Education grant. More information

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME 

The Joseph Badger Local Athletic Hall of Fame honors 

those graduates of Badger High School who have either 

excelled in athletics or who have made significant 

athletic contributions to the school or community. A 

maximum of five honorees will be inducted annually at 

one of the boys’ basketball games 

during the season. Applications for

BADGER ELEMENTARY MOVES TO 6 WEEK GRADING PERIODS 

Following careful consideration and much input from parents, the county 

office (TCESC) and parent groups, Badger Elementary School (BES) has 

moved to a 6-week grading period effective 2011-2012 school year. 

Academics has been and continues to be the top priority for BES 

particularly, when early intervention has been proven to produce the 

most positive academic results. The 6-week grade reporting period is the 

school’s continued effort to keep parents informed about the academic 

progress of their children. The 6-week grade reporting period also 

provides an opportunity for teachers and parents to intervene early and 

often with at-risk students and students with special needs. A schedule

Total revenues have decreased drastically because of the most recent 

reductions in state aide. TO THIS POINT, THE JOSEPH BADGER SCHOOL 

DISTRICT IS PROUD OF CONTROLLING COSTS THROUGH ADVANCE PLANNING 

TO INCLUDE PERSONNEL AND OPERATIONAL SAVINGS WITHOUT SACRIFICING 

STUDENT SERVICES. The district will enter the 2011-2012 school year 

with student services typical of past years:

Fiscal Outlook 

School Districts across Ohio are still reeling from Governor Kasich’s 

FY2012-2013 budget plan. The Governor’s new biennium budget has a 

major impact on educational funding, i.e. state aide. You can see the 

effects of the new budget on the Joseph Badger School District, 

according to the chart below:

• 100% K-12 extra-curricular activities available with NO PAY TO 

PARTICIPATE 

• Continue with the fourth year of the ongoing Computer

curriculum courses. Each student and all staff members will now 

have access to a personal laptop computer on a daily basis thus 

grades 3-10 now have daily use of hands-on technology 

• All Pre-K-12 curriculum offerings will remain intact for the 2011- 

2012 school year 

• The expansion of Instrumental Music to include Grade 5 will 

continue 

• BMS Gifted Curriculum remains in place 

• All Day Every Day Kindergarten/Enrichment remains intact 

• Pre-K will continue as a “not for profit” program 

• Elementary Enrichment for grades 3 and 4 students will continue 

• BHS Advanced Placement Curriculum will continue with the 

addition of AP Psychology 

• Grade 8 students will continue to have an opportunity to take 

three courses for BHS credit: French I, Algebra I, and Intro to 

Physics and Chemistry 

As the District strives to control costs and continue its lowest millage in 

Trumbull County, the Board of Education will provide student services 

within those revenues generated by the federal, state and local 

governments.

November 8, 2011, Fifteen schools in 

Trumbull County are participating in a 

joint effort examining Ohio’s New 

Content Standards. Curriculum 

mapping and alignment coinciding with 

the new Ohio Improvement Process is 

an ongoing collaboration to improve 

teacher instruction. Teachers will 

identify content knowledge and build 

strategies to close achievement gaps 

for all students.

The annual BMS Spelling Bee 

was held January 26, 2011 with 

approximately forty students. 

The 2011 Spelling Bee 

Champion was fifth grader, 

Rebekah Stanhope (right). 

Katie Greskovich (left), eighth 

grader, was runner up. 

Rebekah represented Badger 

Middle School in the Tribune Chronicle Spelling Bee were she placed 4th 

out of thirty-four students.

club this year. Once a week, during recess, 

kids went to Ms. Lundy’s room to read,

play called "The Clever Turtle." They made 

all of the costumes, props and backgrounds 

for the play. They performed the

Children need healthy meals to learn. Joseph Badger offers healthy meals each school day. Breakfast 

costs PK-4 85¢, 5-12 $1.10; lunch costs PK-4 $1.85, 5-12 $2.10. Your children may qualify for free 

meals or for reduced price meals; please complete the free / reduced lunch application. Reduced price is 

30¢ for breakfast and 40¢ for lunch. 

• Do I need to fill out an application for each child? No 

Complete one Free and Reduced Price School Meals Application for all students in your household. We 

cannot approve an application that is not complete, so be certain to complete all required 

information. 

• Do I need an application for free / reduced breakfast? No 

One application serves for both breakfast and lunch. 

• Who can receive free / reduced meals? Children in households with at least one person (including 

grandparents) receiving benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, 

formerly the Food Stamp Program), or Ohio Works First (OWF) benefits will receive free meals. Most 

foster children can receive free meals regardless of your income. Also, your children can receive
