HATE CRIME IN CALIFORNIA Criminal Justice Statistics Center 2004, 7 pp. This report presents 2003 hate crime data for California. Various hate crime data tables and other crime and prosecutorial data are presented along with trend data for years 1995-2003. Highlights include data showing decreases in the categories of hate crime events and offenses, number of victims and known suspects, and bias-motivated crime events. Statistics relating to decreases in violent crime are also presented. Increases in property crime and increases in the number of complaints filed as hate crimes are provided. Hate crime offense trend data for the categories of race/ethnicity/national origin, anti-black, anti-male homosexual, and destruction/vandalism are also presented. HAWAII CRIME IN HAWAII 2003: A REVIEW OF UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS Genbao Gao and Paul Perrone July 2004, 173 pp. The statistics in this report were produced from the operations of Hawaii’s four county police departments. Among the findings was that Hawaii’s index crime rate decreased 8.9% from the rate reported for 2002. A total of 69,267 index crimes were reported across the state in 2003. The report provides offenses statistics for the entire state, and for each of the four counties. Appendixes include definitions, Part II offenses, police statistics, and population estimates. 8
EFFECTS OF TOURISM ON RATES OF SERIOUS CRIME IN HAWAII John M. Knox & Associates, Inc. April 2004, 57 pp. This study examines the link between tourism and UCR Part I crimes in Hawaii. The analysis consisted of looking at serious crime trends in four counties and comparing the trends to changes in visitors as a percentage of the overall population from 1975 to 2002. A negative relationship was found between tourism rates and crime rates.
