There’s a lot of other good stuff that comes with a MobileMe account. For example, you can upload pictures and movies to one of the best gallery sites on the Web. Stunning slideshows greet your visitors; your audience can, at your option, even download your photo files at full resolution for printing. You also get an iDisk, a virtual, multigigabyte hard drive where you can park, back up, or transfer files that are too big to send by email. This chapter, though, concerns what MobileMe can do for you, the iPhone owner. The Setup There’s a bit of setup involved in getting all of this magic syncing to happen. For starters, you need pretty recent stuff: on the Mac, the latest version of Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5, for example. To visit the Web-based versions of your address book, calendar, and email, you need Safari 3 or Firefox 3 (or later versions), either for Mac or Windows. The most popular browser in the world, Internet Explorer, is “not fully supported.” (It’s slower, and not all of the features work.) MobileMe can keep your computer’s mail, address book, and calendar in sync only if you use certain compatible programs: • Macintosh. You have to use the built-in Mail, Address Book, and iCal programs. Windows Vista. • You can use Outlook (mail, address book, and calendar), Windows Mail (mail), and Windows Contacts (address book). 274 Chapter 14
• Windows XP. MobileMe works with Outlook and Outlook Express. No matter which kind of computer you have, it’s really important to sync your iPhone with iTunes before you begin your MobileMe experiment. Check your computer’s address book and calendar programs, for example, to make sure that your data from the iPhone has indeed landed there. To complete your setup in Windows, open the new MobileMe Preferences icon in your Control Panel. (It got deposited there when you installed iTunes 7.7 or later.) Then follow the steps at www.apple.com/mobileme/setup/ iphone/pc.html and www.apple.com/mobileme/setup/pc. To complete your setup on the Mac, open System Preferences, click MobileMe, and then follow the steps at www.apple.com/mobileme/setup/iphone/mac. html and www.apple.com/mobileme/setup/mac. Finally, to set up your iPhone, start on the Home screen. Tap SettingsÆFetch New Data; make sure it says Push, meaning that changes that MobileMe picks up from other sources (Macs, PCs, or the Web) will be automatically beamed down to your phone.
