Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />
ENGL 1413 with a grade of C or better or consent of instructor.<br />
The student will master the writing process, including strategies<br />
for invention, organization, revision, and editing. The student<br />
will develop critical skills in reading, thinking, and writing.<br />
Writing assignments will emphasize analysis and argument and<br />
the student will master research writing and documentation. All<br />
formal essays will require research. AAS: Communications elective.<br />

ENGL 1623 - English II 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENGL 1613 with a grade of C or better; or appropriate<br />
assessment score; or consent of instructor. The student will<br />
continue to develop the writing skills acquired in ENGL 1613.<br />
Writing assigments will stress rhetorical analysis and argument<br />
and will include research and documentation of secondary<br />
sources. Students will produce a greater depth of insight, increasingly<br />
thorough research, and enhanced collaborative techniques.<br />
This course is intended to help students prepare for upper-level<br />
coursework. To receive credit toward the IAI General Education<br />
Core Requirements, this course must be completed with<br />

ENGL 1713 - Introduction to Poetry 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />
ENGL 1413 with a grade of C or better, or consent of instructor.<br />
The student will explore poetry for various criteria including<br />
language, style, imagery, form, rhythm, and sound. Both classical<br />
and modern poetry will be studied. Students will engage in<br />
writing exercises as an opportunity to develop their own poetry.<br />
Evaluation will be based on class participation, essays, individual<br />
assignments and a final exam. AAS: Humanities elective. IAI: H3<br />

ENGL 1743 – Introduction to Literature 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENGL 1413. The student will be exposed to a variety<br />
of literary forms and periods. Assignments will stress the<br />
analysis of literary texts through various critical perspectives.<br />

ENGL 1853 - Introduction to Shakespeare 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />
ENGL 1413 with a grade of C or better or consent of instructor.<br />
The student will study Elizabethan/Jacobean theatre, ideas,<br />
culture, and politics as context and influence on William Shakespeare’s<br />
writing. Through detailed examination of specific plays<br />
and sonnets, students will apply theories of modern criticism and<br />
debate interpretations in order to enhance their understanding<br />
of the human condition. Evaluation is based on reading the<br />
assigned literature and responding to it through study guides,<br />
discussion, formal essays, and exams. AAS: Humanities elective.<br />

ENGL 2553 – Children’s Literature 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENGL 1413. This course introduces a wide variety of<br />
children’s literature with a focus toward development of personal<br />
critical judgment and skill in analysis of these works as literary<br />
and artistic forms. Texts will be chosen which give students a<br />
broad knowledge of children’s literature and an understanding<br />
of the historical development of the genre. Specific areas that<br />
may be examined include fairy tales, fantasy, adventure stories,<br />
animal stories, domestic family fiction, realism, illustration, and<br />
book series.<br />
ENGL 2613 - Ancient & Medieval World Literature 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />
ENGL 1413 with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.<br />
The student will be introduced to literature of the Ancient<br />
Mediterranean, the Early and Middle periods of South Asia and<br />
East Asia, the Early and Classical Middle East, Early Africa,<br />
Early Modern Europe, and the Early Americas from the beginning<br />
of oral and written literature to the 1600s. The student will<br />
demonstrate orally and in writing the interrelationships of social<br />
history, culture, geography, literature, and the other arts. AAS:<br />
Humanities elective. IAI: H3 906 Humanities.<br />
ENGL 2623 - Modern World Literature 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />
ENGL 1413 with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.<br />
The student will be introduced to the literature of South Asia and<br />
East Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and<br />
Australia and New Zealand from the 1700s to the present. The<br />
student will demonstrate orally and in writing the interrelationship<br />
of social history, culture, geography, literature, and the other<br />

ENGL 2733 - American Literature from 1865<br />
to Present 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENGL 1413 with a grade of C or better; or consent<br />
of instructor. The student will be introduced to American<br />
literature from 1865 to the present. This course focuses on the<br />
interrelationship of social history and American writers and texts.<br />
AAS: Humanities elective. IAI: H3 915 Humanities.<br />
ENGL 2813 - Creative Writing 3/0 (3)<br />
The student will sharpen his or her perceptions and ability to<br />
express them creatively. Published and peer examples of poetry,<br />
short fiction, and drama will be read and analyzed in a workshop<br />
format. The student will compose radio and television scripts,<br />
several short stories, and eight to 12 poems in various poetic<br />
forms. Competency in English grammar and mechanics is a<br />
requirement. AAS: Humanities elective.<br />
