Some of the material will be new. The clinical simulation<br />

exams will be stressed as well as test-taking skills. The NBRC<br />

Entry-Level and Advanced-Level Self Assessment Exams will be<br />

administered. Computer-based “mock” board exams must be<br />

passed before the student is eligible to complete the course.<br />

Social Science<br />

SOSC 1533 - International Studies in the Social Sciences<br />

(Based on demand) 1/6 (3)<br />

Students will travel to international/regional locations that may<br />

vary from year to year to study selected topics or current issues<br />

in the social or behavioral sciences (anthropology, economics,<br />

geography, history, political science, psychology). The instructor<br />

will assist students in developing required activities or projects<br />

undertaken during the travel experience and may accompany<br />

them. Appropriate activities will include, but are not limited<br />

to, field excursions, lectures, and discussions. Note: Students<br />

are responsible for all associated travel expenses in addition to<br />

tuition and fees. This course may be repeated twice for credit.<br />

A maximum of three credit hours can be used toward a degree<br />

or certificate.<br />

SOSC 1543 - The Ascent of Man<br />

(Based on demand) 3/0 (3)<br />

This interdisciplinary course examines some major events in<br />

human cultural evolution. The course traces the development of<br />

human creativity, particularly as it has been expressed through<br />

scientific discoveries. The processes of thought and imagination<br />

which are involved in various attempts made by man to analyze<br />

and understand the nature of the universe and of himself are<br />

emphasized.<br />

Social Work<br />

SOCW 2523 - Introduction to Social Work 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: PSYC 1813 or SOCY 2513 or ANTH 1713 or experience<br />

in the field. The student will explore the principles, techniques,<br />

and educational requirements for professional practice.<br />

The philosophy and values of the profession will be emphasized.<br />

The fields of social work practice and their relationship to the<br />

other helping professions will be studied.<br />

Sociology<br />

SOCY 1611 - Introduction to Volunteerism 1/0 (1)<br />

This course is intended to give students a theoretical background<br />

in volunteerism and service learning. Materials will cover the<br />

history of volunteerism and voluntary organizations, along with<br />

the role of volunteerism in democracy. The course will place the<br />

students’ respective service projects in a social context and facilitate<br />

learning about issues relevant to their service area. A requirement<br />

of the course is involvement in a service learning project<br />

and membership in KCC’s Rotaract Service Club, an affiliate of<br />

Rotary International.<br />

SOCY 1621 - Internship in the Social Sciences 0/5 (1)<br />

Prerequisite: SOCY 1611 or concurrent enrollment or consent<br />

of instructor. This course will provide participation in a work<br />

experience in an area of the social and behavioral sciences under<br />

supervision of both the college and the volunteer site supervisor.<br />

Internship objectives will be identified for each student. Each<br />

student will be a member of the KCC Rotaract Service Club, an<br />

affiliate of Rotary International.<br />

SOCY 2513 - Sociology 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />

ENGL 1413 with a grade of C or better or consent of instructor.<br />

This course will acquaint the student with basic concepts and<br />

methods used in the study of sociology. Materials will cover major<br />

social differences, such as class, race, sex, age, and deviant behavior.<br />

Institutions of social life, such as family, education, religion,<br />

power, and work will be examined. AAS: Social and behavioral<br />

science elective. IAI: S7 900 Social and behavioral science.<br />

SOCY 2523 - Contemporary Social Problems 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: SOCY 2513 or PSYC 1813 or ANTH 1713. The<br />

course will present concepts and methods of sociology and will<br />

require an analysis of current issues. The student will learn to<br />

select appropriate data from personal experience, journalistic<br />

sources, and sociological materials in order to critique and analyze<br />

SOCY 2543 - Race & Ethnic Relations 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: SOCY 2513 or PSYC 1813 or ANTH 1713. This<br />

course is an analysis of racial, ethnic and religious groups using<br />

the sociological perspective. Students will become familiar with<br />

and analyze current issues and social problems related to race<br />

and ethnicity. AAS: Social and behavioral science elective. IAI: S7<br />

903D Social and behavioral science.<br />

SOCY 2553 - Marriage & The Family 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: SOCY 2513 or PSYC 1813 or ANTH 1713. This<br />

course examines the changing nature of the family in America.<br />

It considers how mates are selected, the nature of relationships<br />

within marriage, and the process and effects of ending or altering<br />

the marital situation. AAS: Social and behavioral science elective.<br />

IAI: S7 902 Social and behavioral science.<br />

Spanish<br />

SPAN 1503 - Conversational Spanish 3/0 (3)<br />

The student will be introduced to the basics of the Spanish language<br />

with emphasis on essential speaking and listening skills.<br />

The student will learn the fundamentals of idiomatic vocabulary,<br />

basic grammar and syntax, and introductory cultural traditions.<br />

This course is not intended to be part of the Spanish language<br />

sequence. It is a stand-alone course. It is an excellent supplement<br />

to the regular Spanish sequence of SPAN 1514 and SPAN 1524<br />

since it gives additional practice in basic conversational patterns.<br />

Students who choose to take the regular sequence can take this<br />

course prior to, concurrently with, or following SPAN 1514 and/<br />

or SPAN 1524. AAS: Humanities elective.<br />

SPAN 1514 - Elementary Spanish I 4/0 (4)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or consent of instructor.<br />

This is a comprehensive elementary course including: grammar,<br />

oral and written composition, oral practice, and cultural<br />

studies. One research project and one oral presentation will be<br />

required. AAS: Humanities elective.<br />
