BIOL 2714 - Microbiology 3/2 (4)<br />
Prerequisite: BIOL 1514 or CHEM 1504 or CHEM 1514. This<br />
course will focus on the life of micro-organisms to include their<br />
organization, functions, metabolic processes, growth, control,<br />
genetics, evolution, and ecology. A study of diseases caused by<br />
pathogens, the host immunological response, and the role of<br />
microorganisms in the environment also will be examined, along<br />
with advances in their use in biotechnology. In the laboratory,<br />
students will focus on the physical and biochemical requirements<br />
and characteristics used for the identification of unknown<br />
bacteria. Students will be expected to identify unknown bacteria<br />
by performing and demonstrating effective use of the techniques<br />
learned in lecture and laboratory classes. AAS: Life science (laboratory<br />
science) elective.<br />
Business<br />
BSNS 1312 - Proofreading & Editing 2/0 (2)<br />
This course will focus on the application of proofreading skills<br />
and English grammar, usage, and spelling. Students will review<br />
formatting for business letters and reports and will proofread<br />
business documents for content, grammar, punctuation, expression,<br />
and mechanical errors.<br />
BSNS 1353 - Administrative Office Procedures 2/2 (3)<br />
Prerequisites: COSC 1513 and COSC 1023. This capstone course<br />
for administrative assistant and office assistant training places heavy<br />
emphasis on the supervisory and administrative skills expected of<br />
college-trained office professionals. Topics include public and human<br />
relations, problem-solving and decision-making, technology and<br />
procedures, document creation and distribution, research and<br />
report writing, travel and conference planning, and employment<br />
and career advancement.<br />
BSNS 1373 - Personal Finance 3/0 (3)<br />
Students will study the basic principles and concepts of personal<br />
finance. Topics include: credit, loans, insurance, stocks, bonds,<br />
mutual funds, real estate, retirement, and estate planning.<br />
BSNS 1411 - Keyboarding .5/1 (1)<br />
This course will provide basic instruction in the “touch” system<br />
of keyboarding. Students will use personal computers while<br />
learning to type with the proper fingers without watching the<br />
keys. Students will learn both the alpha-numeric keyboard and<br />
the 10-key pad. Students who are enrolled currently or who have<br />
received credit for COSC 1023 or BSNS 2033 will not receive<br />
credit for this course. This also applies to similar courses transferred<br />
from other colleges or universities. BSNS 1411 may be<br />
waived if one semester of high school typing has been completed<br />
with a grade of C or better.<br />
BSNS 1553 - Introduction to Business 3/0 (3)<br />
The student will discuss the nature of our business environment<br />
in the United States. The student will indicate the advantages<br />
and disadvantages of the common forms of business organization<br />
and also will discuss and analyze problems related to finance, the<br />
operation of a business, marketing, management, personnel, and<br />
labor relations in a contemporary situation.<br />
BSNS 1603 - Business Communications 3/0 (3)<br />
The student will relate effective communications to successful<br />
management. He or she will describe and apply positive qualities<br />
and techniques of effective written and oral communication and<br />
will construct, present, and explain functional types of business<br />
messages including application letters and resumes. AAS: Communications<br />
elective for specific curricula only.<br />
BSNS 1653 - Business Law 3/0 (3)<br />
The student will identify basic principles of law that apply to<br />
business. Through case studies, the student will practice the<br />
decision-making process and demonstrate an understanding of<br />
contracts, commercial papers, sales, personal property and bailment,<br />
and real property.<br />
BSNS 1663 - Legal & Social Environment<br />
of Business 3/0 (3)<br />
This course involves the study of the political, business, social, and<br />
legal forces that affect activities of modern business. The course<br />
will consider judicial processes, federal controls, and regulations.<br />
This course is designed for students planning to transfer to a<br />
senior institution where they will major in business.<br />
BSNS 2113 - Small Business Management 3/0 (3)<br />
This course covers basic concepts and methods necessary for effective<br />
start-up and management of a small business. Topics include<br />
planning, legal aspects, financing, accounting, marketing, and<br />
management. Theoretical and practical learning exercises will be<br />
incorporated in the class. This course may be taken under the<br />
Pass/Fail grading option. See Pages 170-171.<br />
BSNS 2143 - Human Relations in Business 3/0 (3)<br />
This course is intended to prepare students to handle effectively<br />
the responsibility of relating to other people. The ultimate goal<br />
is to learn how to motivate individuals to work together productively,<br />
to satisfy their personal needs, and at the same time to<br />
meet organizational objectives.<br />
BSNS 2213 - Human Resource Management 3/0 (3)<br />
This course covers basic principles and procedures of personnel<br />
administration. Topics include: job analysis, staffing, training,<br />
performance appraisal, compensation, and labor relations.<br />
BSNS 2311 - Successful Customer Service 1/0 (1)<br />
This course focuses on essential customer service skills that help<br />
organizations accomplish their goals, deal with problems and<br />
complaints, win new customers and create loyal customers. The<br />
course concentrates on the key concepts and best practices involved<br />
in customer service, personal skills, and communication<br />
skills needed to deliver successful customer service.<br />
BSNS 2403 - Office Professional Internship<br />
(Based on demand) 0/15 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Successful completion of the courses listed in the<br />
first four semesters of the Office Professional curriculum and approval<br />
of program coordinator. The student will apply his or her<br />
knowledge and skills by working a minimum of 200 hours in a<br />
cooperating business under the supervision of a training sponsor<br />
and the instructor. The student will gain understanding of the<br />
administrative office procedures by discussing and analyzing onthe-job<br />
experiences with fellow students and the instructor.<br />
BSNS 2413 - Management Field Project 0/15 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Successful completion of at least half of the courses<br />
required in the Business Associate in Applied Science curriculum,<br />
or consent of instructor. The student will apply his/her<br />
