PURPOSE OF REPORT
To determine the Mayor and Councillor fees payable from 1 July 2010.
BACKGROUND
The Local Government Remuneration Tribunal has made its determination for 2010.
COMMENTS
The Tribunal has determined that Mayor and Councillor fees <strong>be</strong> increased by 3%.
The Tribunal states:
“In determining the level <strong>of</strong> increase for the 2010 review the Tribunal has had regard <strong>to</strong> the
improving economic conditions as Australia emerges from the Global Financial Crisis and
key economic indica<strong>to</strong>rs, including the Consumer Price Index and the Labour Price Index.”
The proposed fees from 1 July 2010 for Ku-ring-gai (Metropolitan category) are:
Councillor
Mayor

The Councillor fee is paid <strong>to</strong> the Mayor in addition <strong>to</strong> the Mayoral fee.
In 2009 the Tribunal recommended a 2.5% increase in fees. On 7 July 2009 Council resolved not <strong>to</strong>
increase the fees <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> paid from 1 July 2009. The fees currently <strong>be</strong>ing paid are therefore the
amounts set on 10 June 2008 (Councillor - $15,120; Mayor - $33,010).
It is recommended that the maximum fees <strong>be</strong> paid.
In regard <strong>to</strong> the classification <strong>of</strong> Councils the Tribunal states, after considering submissions
received:
“The next review <strong>of</strong> categories is scheduled <strong>to</strong> take place during the 2012 review. Until then
the Tribunal does not expect <strong>to</strong> move <strong>council</strong>s within categories unless there is a significant
change in the role and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> individual <strong>council</strong>s. On the basis <strong>of</strong> the
information received, the Tribunal finds that there is no compelling case <strong>to</strong> further adjust
categories at this time.”
