Succeeding in Your
Health and Fitness
By Adam Ali
As your weekend ends and your lying in
your bed, you decide that this coming
week you are really going to stick to
a workout routine and eat healthier.
You will not have your regular pastry
on the go. You plan to have a super
healthy lunch and cut back dessert for
the entire week. You will also head to
the gym after work just before heading
home at least three times this week.
It seems like a solid plan and you have
the intentions of going through with
it. Monday comes and you just can’t
help ordering something sugary and
starchy to go with your coffee, so you
get a muffin. The breakfast satisfies
you and gives you an instant rush of
sugar-energy! However, you feel guilty
45 minutes later. You decide since you
have already ruined your eating plans
for the day to grab a pizza for lunch
and skip the gym altogether with
the self-talk that you will start again
tomorrow. If this sounds at all familiar
to you, read on…
fitness. I am here to inform you that no
matter what fitness level you are at,
you will make mistakes on your way to
achieving your ideal fitness and health
goals. There will be some missed
workouts and also poor food choices
on your route to success. This is where
the 80/20 rule comes into place. Do
your absolute best to achieve an 80%
effort towards living a healthy lifestyle
and 20% of wiggle room to indulge
in things you enjoy that are not so
healthy. This approach keeps you sane
and human.
One of the mottos I live by is that
losing is not about not winning, it’s
about not trying. So if you come
short from an attempt then, learn
from these mistakes and do better.
Realize what went wrong and
figure out how you can avoid similar
situations in the future.
Here are three tips to help you on your
journey to a healthier YOU.
consider joining a sports club of some
sort. I recently incorporated dodge ball
into my weekly fitness regime. I joined
a dodge ball league and now I have a
fun day of ball-throwing action that I
look forward to every week.
Drink more water
The cause for many hormonal and
emotional instability is the lack of
water consumption. The Institute of
Medicine sets general guidelines for
total water intake. It recommends that
women consume a total of 91 ounces
(that’s about 2.7 litres) per day for
all food and beverages. For men, it’s
about 125 ounces a day (or 3.7 litres).
Depending on your diet, about 25% of
the water you consume comes from
your food (How much water do you
really need? - DrOz.com).
Incorporate the following tips into
your daily life and you will be on your
way to a healthier lifestyle.
The truth is that a lot of people have
the above mindset when it comes to
their health and fitness. They tend to
give up when they slip up. But in reality,
people who find success will fail many
times before they succeed, no matter
what their goals are.
Let’s assess one of the most powerful
and wealthiest woman of today. It has
been documented that Oprah Winfrey
was fired from one of her first jobs
because she was “unfit for TV.” It took
her many years of failure and learning
to finally have her own talk show. The
Oprah Winfrey Show then dominated
for 25 years and Oprah now has her
own TV Network. Understand that
failure is a step towards your goal, not
a reason to give up on it.
This is the kind of mindset that is
needed to obtain long-term health and
If possible, get a personal
trainer
A personal trainer will create a
foundation to get you active and turn
working out and healthy eating into a
habit. When you feel you are ready to
do it on your own, then proceed on
your own. It’s really a great investment
that has long-term benefits on your
wellbeing. If the luxury of
getting a trainer is out of
reach, seek guidance by
training with a friend, or
follow a workout DVD or
online workout video.
Engage in physical
activities that you
enjoy
If you don’t enjoy resistance
training, you should
