There are those who create art and
there are those from whom art
emanates. For Camille Lauren, the
word emanate truly speaks to her,
so much so that she has (apropos)
named the recent art exhibit for which
she fulfilled the dual role of Creative
Director and Curator: Emanate Gallery
Exhibit.
Taking me back across time and space,
Camille recounts her memories of
having been born and raised—albeit
for a short while—on the vibrant and
colourful island of Curacao. Upon
drawing comparisons between the
multi-coloured and Dutch-inspired
architecture that can be observed in
her homeland, to those bright colours
that can be found in her mixed-media
produced works of art, it is by no
means a coincidence that an artist was
born out of such a vivid nation.
Camille touts her mother and countless
family members for having recognized,
since she was a child, her interest in
all things related to art. Purchasing
art supplies for the young artist’s
birthdays, in lieu of inconsequential
gifts became commonplace and
somewhat of a family affair. The
self-taught artist pays homage to
the remarkable figures (famous or
otherwise), musical instruments,
particularly those belonging to the
percussion family, along with the
inspirational and oft-convoluted stories
from diverse peoples that have shaped
and influenced her development as an
artist. This 21-year-old plainly veers off
the beaten path in both her work, as
well as by way of her insights regarding
life in general. As a rule of thumb,
Camille believes life to be a mystifying
experience; one that is almost
reminiscent of an elusive dream that
sort of just happens. You have to “do
what comes naturally to you.”During
my conversation with Camille, she
much to my surprise stated: “I haven’t
arrived.”
What Camille means is that as an
illustration student at OCAD, who has
entered into her second year of studies
in the Bachelor of Design program as
