Upgrade and flood mititage the Bruce Highway at Goorgana Plains, and the Hamilton Plains section of Shute Harbour Road. Monitor and review demand. Lobby the Queensland Governments Bruce Highway Crisis Group that this is a priority for the region. Steps should be taken to ensure scoping work is undertaken and funding is identified for this work. 7.4 Superstructure Opportunity Locations Status Next Steps 7.4.1 Developing a new sewage treatment plant for Bowen Bowen Council has awarded tenders for the construction of upgraded sewage treatment plants at Cannonvale and Proserpine as a priority to meet environmental requirements. The Bowen Plant will also require an upgrade to meet future demands and future environmental requirements. Assist WRC to identify state and federal funding to ensure that basic supporting infrastructure is in place. 7.4.2 Developing the Burdekin Pipeline and treatment facility to link Bowen with the Burdekin Dam Bowen SunWater Limited prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and accompanying Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for a proposed water treatment transport system from Clair Weir on the Burdekin River to Bowen and surrounding areas in 2010. In 2011 SunWater decided not to proceed with the development at this time as the project is not currently economically viable due to the now low industrial customer demand in the region that is required to underpin costs. SunWater remains committed to providing water supply solutions for the region where it is commercially viable to do so and will continue to investigate alternative water supply sources for future demand associated with the Port of Abbot Point and the Bowen Abbot Point State Development Area. 7.4.3 Developing the Burdekin Pipeline from Burdekin Dam to Proserpine 7.4.4 Improving the supply of electricity in the Whitsunday Region Whitsundays Whitsundays As the project is not currently economically viable due to the now low industrial customer demand in the region that is required to underpin costs SunWater has decided not to proceed (refer 7.4.2.) The shut down of the Peak Load Collinsville Power Station will have an impact on power supply particularly during summer months. Without additional substations, the supply of electricity to all new developments in the region cannot be guaranteed. Monitor and review demand and supply to ensure that basic supporting infrastructure meets the needs of the growing region and minimises the threat of water restrictions. Plans to introduce additional substations, retro fit underground power supply, or to develop other sources for generating electricity need to be prepared, funded and implemented. 7 Investment Projects 7.4.5 Improving the supply of telecommunications services Whitsundays Council has approved the installation of a number of telecommunication facilities to improve the telecommunication services.
