Community Health Needs Assessment 2013 However, the Madison County Health Rankings 2012 report noted that the county showed improvement overall except in Clinic Care and Social and Economic Factors which went from being 5 th highest county in Kentucky in 2010 to 19 th in 2012. Changes were attributed to reduced high school graduation, increased unemployment, children in poverty, inadequate social support and single-parent households (Madison County, KY - County Health Rankings 2010-2012 Report) Comments received from the CHNA survey and focus groups sighted lack of preventative care for those who are poor and do not have insurance. Some have been refused treatment because they did not have the ability to pay. Lack of dental care and inability to pay for treatment came up as a major health concern. Berea Health Ministries provided service until it closed its doors in August, 2012. Richmond has Health Now! for those with no insurance and limited to no ability to pay. Saint Joseph Berea Family Medicine has been designated a rural health clinic. Neither the clinic nor the hospital refuse treatment for anyone who is in need. Financial counselors work with patients to make sure they have medical treatment that is needed. To go along with this the number of free lunches and reduced meals for children has increased from 47% in 2006 to 50% in 2011. Diseases associated with children living in poverty include untreated dental problems, causing them to lose teeth too early; poor nutrition leading to health problems and obesity in some; and living in unsafe housing conditions can worsen asthma or chronic bronchitis. Children living in single-parent households are measured because children in these households are statistically ―at risk for adverse health outcomes such as mental health problems (including substance abuse, depression, and suicide) and unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and excessive alcohol use.‖ In addition, self-reported health and mortality among lone parents tended to be worse than parents living as couples (Excerpted from an article in the Richmond Register on April 12, 2012, ―18 Percent in County without Health Insurance). The Madison County Health Department has made an effort to increase enrollment of the number of youth under the age of 19 enrolled in Kentucky Child Health Insurance Program (KCHIP). Their goal was to increase it from 9% in 2000 to 15% by 2014 (from 1262 youths to 1451). Aging Population According to the Department of Aging for Kentucky, the over 60 population is the fastest growing population and estimated to increase 91% from the year 2000 to the year 2030. In Disabilities (including Alzheimer’s/Dementia) and poverty levels are unique needs that will impact this group and put an extra burden on families who take the role as caregivers. Another factor in looking at the aging demographic is that over half of the grandparents in Kentucky care for their grandchildren. Additionally, 23% of aging make up total mental health population in Kentucky. Services for the aging population are limited, and the ones available are not always known by the elderly or their caregivers.
