Focus Groups: What are Resources & Barriers? • Two colleges: Berea and EKU • Addition of Walking/hiking/bike trails • Location of the hospital • Food bank • Libraries • Adult day care • Family centers at schools • Lack of pediatricians • Urgent Care not adequate • Misunderstanding of behavioral health issues • Medicaid coverage • Cost of organic/healthy foods • Poverty/unemployment • Lack of preventative services for low income (Berea Health Ministries) • Lack of sidewalks What is your perception of Saint Joseph Berea? • Very good experience personally and of family members; staff helpful; friendly caring staff • Good services for small community • Atmosphere: spiritual, artwork • Involvement in and support of the community and schools • ER experience: good by most, not so good by others: appreciate the nurses • Registration for lab, X-rays, etc takes too long • Unclear as to all services provided (several comments on need for diabetes education and support; surprised to hear SJB offered these services) What is your perception of Saint Joseph Berea? What’s great about our community? • Small, beautiful community that is safe for families • Welcoming, open to diverse groups • Having a local college and good libraries • It is a welcoming community with a fascinating cultural history and positive collaboration between resources and local agencies! It has a social conscience and is cognizant of its role as environmental steward.
