fertilizer <strong>and</strong> pesticides correctly <strong>and</strong> safely.”<br />

Lack of competition for chillis was another worry. “I’m afraid<br />

with only one company the price will be pushed down, if more<br />

companies made contracts prices would rise. For example, the<br />

Burmese are now pay<strong>in</strong>g 30 baht for a kilogram of these chillis,”<br />

said Maitoun.<br />

Misplaced optimism<br />

Nevertheless with the prospect of earn<strong>in</strong>g 20,000 baht, a<br />

substantial sum for a man who did not know the colour of a<br />

1,000 baht banknote, Maip<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> April said that he was content.<br />

“I’m quite happy with the system. They come <strong>and</strong> help us <strong>in</strong><br />

terms of production <strong>in</strong>put, we only make a small <strong>in</strong>vestment. In<br />

case the crop fails because of natural disaster I do not have to<br />

repay the company.”<br />

Maitoun, the Padam khet production group head <strong>and</strong> village<br />

head, saw significant benefits from contract farm<strong>in</strong>g: “There are<br />

three advantages. Firstly, we have confidence that after grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

there will be a market for our produce. Secondly, there will be<br />

more work for farmers <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>come. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the farmer<br />

might be found by comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g local<br />

knowledge with research from<br />

elsewhere. “I’d like to do trials<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g a more organic approach<br />

to chillis, produc<strong>in</strong>g fertilizers <strong>and</strong><br />

other <strong>in</strong>puts locally, to compare<br />

the outputs,” said L<strong>in</strong>g, the VECO<br />
