The most recent version of clusterKnoppix also adds the tyd service from the CHAOS project Latter<br />
(2003a,b). CHAOS focuses on add<strong>in</strong>g a virtual private network (VPN) layer on top of open network protocols<br />
<strong>in</strong> order for the openMosix-style cluster to be used securely on public networks. To this end, CHAOS <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
the FreeSWAN kernel patches.<br />
3.2 Quantian <strong>and</strong> openMosix<br />
By provid<strong>in</strong>g the scientific <strong>applications</strong> listed <strong>in</strong> section 2.2 <strong>in</strong> the framework of an openMosix-enabled “live<br />
cdrom”, Quantian offers a synthesis of three dist<strong>in</strong>ct doma<strong>in</strong>s:<br />
1. Knoppix auto-configuration <strong>and</strong> ease of <strong>in</strong>stallation on virtually any recent desktop or laptop;<br />
2. a large number of analytically-focused <strong>applications</strong> pre-loaded <strong>and</strong> configured ready for deployment;<br />
3. openMosix extensions to the L<strong>in</strong>ux kernel permitt<strong>in</strong>g approximately l<strong>in</strong>early-scaled performance <strong>in</strong>creases<br />
with additional nodes <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle-system image cluster.<br />
