Background and Education:<br />

Judge Miller was born <strong>in</strong> West<br />

Union, Iowa. In 1973, he<br />

received his undergraduate<br />

degree, with <strong>the</strong> highest<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ction, from <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Iowa, and was<br />

awarded <strong>the</strong> Purple and Old<br />

Gold Award for Meritorious<br />

Scholarship <strong>in</strong> Political Science.<br />

He received his law degree from<br />

<strong>the</strong> University of Iowa, with<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ction, <strong>in</strong> 1976.<br />

Community Activities: Judge Miller was a member of <strong>the</strong><br />

Rotary, Northwest Iowa Domestic Abuse Council, and his<br />

church council.<br />

Professional Activities: A past member of <strong>the</strong> Iowa<br />

Association for Justice, Judge Miller served on <strong>the</strong> board<br />

of governors from 1998 until 2009. He was chairperson<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Iowa Association for Justice’s Crim<strong>in</strong>al Law Core<br />

Group. Judge Miller frequently speaks on <strong>the</strong> topic of<br />

crim<strong>in</strong>al law at cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g legal education sem<strong>in</strong>ars.<br />

Family: Judge Miller is married with two daughters.<br />

Career: For 34 years, Judge Miller was engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

crim<strong>in</strong>al and civil trial practice of law. From 1976 to<br />

1978, he was <strong>the</strong> assistant Woodbury County attorney, and<br />

from 1978 to 1980, he was <strong>the</strong> Woodbury County Public<br />

Defender. Judge Miller was <strong>the</strong> assistant Iowa attorney<br />

general with <strong>the</strong> Area Prosecutions Division from 1980 to<br />

1984. He entered <strong>the</strong> private practice of law <strong>in</strong> 1984, and<br />

worked until his appo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>in</strong> 2010.<br />
