Background and Education:<br />
Justice Mansfield grew up<br />
and attended public school <strong>in</strong><br />
Massachusetts. He earned his<br />
undergraduate degree from<br />
Harvard <strong>in</strong> 1978, where he<br />
graduated magna cum laude and<br />
Phi Beta Kappa. He received his<br />
law degree from Yale <strong>in</strong> 1982.<br />
After law school, he clerked for<br />
<strong>the</strong> U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth<br />
Circuit, <strong>the</strong> federal appellate<br />
court based <strong>in</strong> New Orleans, La.<br />
Career: Follow<strong>in</strong>g his clerkship, Justice Mansfield <strong>in</strong>itially<br />
practiced law <strong>in</strong> Phoenix, Ariz., but moved to Iowa<br />
and jo<strong>in</strong>ed a law firm <strong>in</strong> Des Mo<strong>in</strong>es, so his wife could<br />
pursue her teach<strong>in</strong>g career. While <strong>in</strong> private practice,<br />
Justice Mansfield handled cases <strong>in</strong> many areas, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
agricultural law. Justice Mansfield argued more than 40<br />
appeals, and was named to <strong>the</strong> Best Lawyers <strong>in</strong> America.<br />
Professional Activities: Justice Mansfield has been an<br />
adjunct professor of law at Drake University s<strong>in</strong>ce 1997.<br />
He is a member of <strong>the</strong> Iowa State Bar Association, hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
served as chair of <strong>the</strong> Trade Regulation Section from 2004<br />
to 2006. Justice Mansfield also belongs to <strong>the</strong> Polk County<br />
Bar Association and <strong>the</strong> Iowa Judges Association.<br />
Family and Hobbies: Justice Mansfield is married to an<br />
Iowa native. He has two daughters <strong>in</strong> college and a son<br />
who attends <strong>the</strong> Des Mo<strong>in</strong>es public schools. He volunteers<br />
<strong>in</strong> a before-school program <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Des Mo<strong>in</strong>es public<br />
schools <strong>in</strong> which parents lead elementary school students<br />
<strong>in</strong> discussions of outside read<strong>in</strong>gs. He also teaches<br />
Sunday school weekly at his church. Justice Mansfield is<br />
an assistant coach <strong>in</strong> Little League and volunteers as a<br />
YMCA swim official. Justice Mansfield and his family also<br />
regularly welcome visit<strong>in</strong>g foreign judges to stay <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
home. (Justice Mansfield’s mo<strong>the</strong>r was born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> former<br />
Soviet Union and came to <strong>the</strong> United <strong>States</strong> as a refugee<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1930s.) He enjoys swimm<strong>in</strong>g, read<strong>in</strong>g, and listen<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to his wife play <strong>the</strong> harp.<br />
Justice Mansfield was appo<strong>in</strong>ted to <strong>the</strong> Iowa Court<br />
of Appeals <strong>in</strong> 2009. He served on that court for<br />
approximately two years, writ<strong>in</strong>g more than 220 op<strong>in</strong>ions.<br />
Community Activities: Justice Mansfield served as a<br />
member of <strong>the</strong> board of directors of Goodwill Industries<br />
of Central Iowa and was <strong>the</strong> chair of this organization<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g 2003 and 2004. He also represented <strong>the</strong> nation’s<br />
federation of non-profit community blood centers for<br />
more than fifteen years and, <strong>in</strong> 2008, received <strong>the</strong><br />
President’s Award from that organization.<br />
