Paddle Tennis
Introduced as
New Sport
Last year, Episcopal Academy began a paddle tennis
program. Established by Elspeth Boynton ’07 and Mia
Kent ’08, the team began with just six members, who
travelled three times a week to the Merion Cricket Club
(MCC), which generously allowed the team to use its courts.
This year, the team
doubled in size as
excitement about
Episcopal’s newest
sport has grown.
This last winter,
12 Episcopal
students enthusiastically
made the
trek to MCC every
Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday where they refined their skills and worked on
basic tactics.
Coaches Tim Kent, varsity boys’ tennis coach and member of
the classics department, and Whitaker Powell, varsity girls’ tennis
coach and teacher of 5th grade students at Devon, worked
together to help the beginners with the key fundamentals of the
game and push the more experienced players to improve their
court sense and competitive skills.
This year also saw the first outside competition for this intrepit
group—the team had the opportunity to play two matches
against a team of juniors from the Waynesborough country
club. The first of two battles took place on February 7th and
the second two weeks later on the 21st. Everyone involved had
a great time and there is genuine excitement about the growth
of this game in the years to come. Both Ann O’Shea, head of
the junior program for MAPTA, and the two Episcopal coaches
were thrilled with the progress made this year and are eager
to keep the momentum going next winter.
EA Crew Has
Strong Showing at
City Championships
The Episcopal crew team had a strong showing at this
year’s City Championships. The team took home two
titles and performed admirably in its other events.
The JV girls’ double won the city championship
with Kelly Burke ’08 and Brittany Bruder ’08 at the helm. The
JV boys’ four (Gardner Butterworth ’08, Jeremy Asch ’08, Alejandro
Rettig y Martinez ’08, TJ Carson ’08, and Verity Johnson
’08) also won the city championship. The varsity girls’ double
came in second, and the varsity boys’ four finished fourth.
Dance Team Joins
With Theater Department
Athletics and arts departments collaborate
on celebration of movement and drama
The Episcopal Academy Upper School recently hosted
“An Evening of Dance and Student One Act Plays.”
The collaborative event was created to showcase dance
performances perfected by the dance sports team and
original works written for the stage by students from across the
Upper School.
The program featured four dance numbers and five studentwritten,
produced, and acted plays. The drama selections were
chosen by the Domino Board, Episcopal’s student thespian
club. The dance selections included Broadway choreographies
along with a team-arranged piece.
