It is well documented that obesity is a risk factor for many chronic conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Depression and self-esteem issues can also result from obesity. Results from the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), using measured heights and weights, indicate that an estimated 32.7 percent of U.S. adults 20 years and older are overweight, 34.3 percent are obese and 5.9 percent are extremely obese. One of the national health objectives for 2010 is to reduce the prevalence of obesity among adults to less than 15 percent. CFHP has adopted the National Institutes of Health (NHI) Guidelines on Overweight and Obesity in Adults. Based on these guidelines, the National Institutes of Health and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute developed the Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults. A complete copy of the report is available at their web site http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/. The areas addressed in the report include the classification of overweight and obesity by BMI; risk status; BMI categorized by inches; classification by BMI, waist circumference and associated disease risk; advantages of weight loss; goals for weight loss; how to achieve weight loss; and goals for weight loss maintenance.
