10.2 National Cholesterol Education <strong>Guidelines</strong> NATIONAL CHOLESTEROL EDUCATION PROGRAM (NCEP) GUIDELINES FOR LDL-C 1 TLC Cut Points and LDL-C Goals by Risk Category Risk Category LDL-C Goal Initiate TLC Consider Drug Therapy High risk: CHD 1 or CHD risk equivalents 2 (10-year risk>20%) Moderately high risk: 2+ risk factors 3 (10-year risk 10% to 20%) < 100 mg/dL (optional goal: ≥ 100 mg/dL 8 > 100 mg/dL 10 (
No CHD; 0 to 1, or 2+ Risk Factors Initiate TLC diet and exercise 6 wks If LDL-C goal is not achieved, initiate LDL-C - lowering drug therapy 6 wks 6 wks If LDL-C goal is not achieved, intensify therapy with higher dose or add-on therapy 6 wks If LDL-C goal is not achieved, intensify therapy or refer to a lipid specialist Every 4 to 6 months Periodically monitor response and adherence to therapy CHD or CHD Risk Equivalents (Baseline LDL-C ≥ 130 mg/dL) Initiate TLC diet and exercise.
