Your heifers are important financial "investments," because a heifer's development can affect her performance for the rest of her life. That means your heifers determine the future of your milking herd. The proper nutrition and management in these phases can help a heifer become a more productive cow, have healthier calves without rebreeding problems, and give you improved milk production. Important Tips for Raising Award-Winning Dairy Cattle Efficient production requires a thorough understanding and application of the fundamental principles of good husbandry and sanitation. These include: 1. Good Breeding - Good breeding gives dairy cattle the ability to perform satisfactorily and produce healthy offspring. 2. Good Nutrition - An adequate amount of a balanced ration containing all required nutrients, vitamins, and minerals is essential for good health and proper conformation. 3. Sound Management - "Know how" is required to provide the proper environment and care to minimize stress, which can adversely affect development. In addition, consult with your local veterinarian to implement a comprehensive health and disease prevention program. 4. Careful Sanitation - Cleanliness is essential in providing a healthful environment. These are building blocks of the AgriLand Co-op’s Show Dairy Cattle program and the keys to successful dairy cow production. Breed Champion awards will be offered only when 3 or more animals of the same breed are exhibited and at the judge’s discretion. Color breeds will offer champion awards only to a champion and a reserve champion in each breed not Junior and Senior Champion Awards. All cattle must be hornless except calves born after December 1 of the year preceding the exhibit year. Outgrowths from horn-removal will not constitute a horn unless it is pointed and deemed hazardous by the superintendent in charge. Newspaper bedding is not permitted. It is recommended that dairy exhibitors should wear white bottoms: (white pants or skirts) with the top: (shirt or blouse) being white, colored or plaid. Farm logos or other advertisements of products on clothing will be considered inappropriate dress during the dairy show. The first two blues in every class are eligible for champion awards. Ring entry in the champion class start with youngest first blue, youngest second blue and continue by age to the oldest class. Animals showing for ribbon only are not eligible to show in the championship classes. If there are not three divisions of animals exhibited then they shall show for any other breed champion. Unfresh 2-Year-Old – Born June 1, 2007 to August 31, 2007 Cow – Jr. 2 years old (in milk) – Born between March 1, 2007 and August 31, 2007. Aged Cow – On or before August 31, 2005. Dry Cow 2, 3, and 4 Yr – Born September 1, 2005 to March 1, 2008. Dry Cow – 5 years old and over – Born on or before August 31, 2005. A dry cow is any cow that was fresh 280 days or more, prior to the date of the show, may be shown at the option of the exhibitor in the Dry or Milking Cow Class. If the exhibitor wishes to make the selection on the day of the show, the cow must be entered in both the appropriate milking class and dry cow class. The exhibitor is also responsible for notifying the clerk and dairy superintendent of his/her choice prior to the start of the show. A cow milked less than 280 days must show in the milking class, unless she is recorded as dry on the DHIA Production Report and this must accompany the animal to be shown in the Dry Cow Class. Junior Exhibitor Group is a group of three females including one calf, one yearling and one two year old or over. Produce of Dam shall consist of two animals of any age, which are the produce of one cow. Dam and Offspring shall consist of a cow and one of her offspring.
