3. Decorations: Backgrounds, club identifications, animal identified (25 pts.) Scoring may be changed to reflect State Fair herdsmanship recommendations. Items not allowed in dairy exhibits include: Any obstructions behind the animals, taller than the bedding bank. Items allowed include: Milk cans, railroad ties, fences, and etc. between exhibits. DAIRY HERDSMANSHIP AWARDS The Dairy Superintendents will divide 4-H clubs or FFA chapters into half-large and half-small groups. Top 3 in each group will receive a ribbon award. If a club or FFA chapter does not judge according to the posted schedule, they are not eligible for awards. No Fair entry required. The Fond du Lac Area Agri-Business Council sponsors cash awards. The top three clubs and/or chapters in each group will receive the following prizes: 1 st $50.00 2 nd $30.00 3 rd $20.00 SPECIAL AWARDS First Place Holsteins: American Breeder Service will provide a ribbon to the exhibitor of the first place Holstein animals in each class. Registered Junior Champion Holstein Female: Trophy awarded by Accelerated Genetics, Ken Montsma. Grade Junior Champion Holstein Female: Trophy awarded by DuWayne and Adeline Belling of Rosendale. Registered Senior Champion Holstein Female: Trophy awarded by Grande Cheese. Grade Senior Champion Holstein Female: Trophy awarded by Redeker Dairy. Grand Champion Female Registered and Grade: Trophy awarded by Accelerated Genetics. Reserve Grand Champion Female Registered and Grade: Trophy awarded by Garnet Distributing. Grand and Reserve Champion Registered Other Breeds: Trophy awarded by Tom Pieper, Monsanto. Registered Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Brown Swiss Female: Trophy awarded by Leo and Chris Kramer. Best Udder Award: Trophy awarded by Alta Genetics. Top Protein Award: Trophy awarded by Alto Dairy to the Junior Exhibitor of the cow with the top 305 days pounds of protein. The protein is to be verified by official DHIA report; and must have placed in the red or blue group with procedure and placement to be determined by the County Fair Dairy Committee. Best Junior Exhibitor of 3 or More Dairy Animals: The Fond du Lac County Holstein Association will award $9.00 –1 st place; $6.00 – 2 nd place; and $3.00 – 3 rd place; to the first three places in Class A, Lot 19. Showmanship Awards Grades 3-4 Bob Kottke Memorial Grades 5-6 Clarence Boyke Memorial Grades 7-8 Krohn Family Memorial Grades 9-10 Larry and Debbie Pollack Award Grades 11-13 Dean Birschbach, Agromatic East Central Select Sires will award a halter to the Top Showman in Entry 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5. Grand Champion Showman: Trophy awarded by Gundrum Fertilizer and Feed Reserve Grand Champion Showman: Joe Julka Memorial trophy awarded. DIVISION 10 – 4-H Dairy Management Project A three-ring binder report or poster display (11”x14”) can be on any of the 4-H Dairy Management sessions, including the tour. The exhibit should include why the dairy management practice is important and the economic benefit, if applicable. It is highly recommended the project exhibit emphasize how the dairy management practice is used on your farm or with your 4-H animals. An attractive report including pictures, diagrams, and charts is encouraged. The judge will be told to judge the project in this manner: 25% overall appearance and presentation, 50% content, 25% face-to-face conversation (youth’s understanding of the content). Youth will be informed by letter from the UWEX Dairy and Livestock Agent (Paul Dyk) what is the minimum participation required to qualify for cash awards. Dairy Management Project DIVISION 11 – Dairy Poster or Photography To receive premium for a poster or photography, your animal may not be exhibited at the Fair because of injury, illness, or death. Exhibitor must enter the class on the Fair Entry form. Follow the guidelines set for Vet. Science. Judging will be face-to-face the Thursday prior to opening of the Fair. Poster must be 11”x14”. 18

Quality Milk Auction The Fond du Lac County Holstein Breeders sponsor a Quality Milk Auction to reward project members with cows that have produced low linear score milk. Dairy baskets will be sold from the lowest linear score cows in the 2, 3, 4, 5 years and older milking cow classes and dry cow class. All breeds will be combined when selecting the individual with the lowest linear score in each age category. To qualify, exhibitors must submit the last completed lactation with an average linear score with a minimum of five (5) tests, except 2-years-olds who must provide the past three monthly linear scores prior to the Fair. The cow must be on official test recognized by a breed association. An animal must be entered by the same person that is showing her at the fair. A cow cannot use the same completed linear score record used in a previous year’s Quality Milk Auction competition. This information must be submitted to the Fond du Lac County Extension office on Wednesday, two weeks before the sale. Submissions need to include the class under which the animal will be shown. Once selected, each participant will receive a letter from the auction chairperson listing activities required prior to the auction. All dairy cows selected for the Quality Milk Auction must be entered to show and be checked in by 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, of the Fair by the Dairy Superintendents or they will be disqualified. The Quality Milk Auction will be held in conjunction with the Market Livestock Auction on Wednesday of the Fair. Proceeds will be split with 25% going to the exhibitor and 75% to cover the sale expense, improvements to fairgrounds, and fund State Fair Junior Dairy Exhibits. Cow Classes and Linear Score Determination: • 2 years – average of the past three monthly linear scores • 3 years – average linear score for last completed lactation • 4 years – average linear score for last completed lactation • 5 years and older – average linear score for last completed lactation • Dry cow – average linear score for last completed lactation 19 Tie breaker will be determined by somatic cell count average. Youth may sell in both the Quality Milk Auction and the Market Livestock Sale. FOND DU LAC COUNTY 4-H AND FFA MEAT ANIMAL PROJECT Project and Sales Guidelines, Entry Information General Guidelines All market animals must meet regular Fair Health Requirements (reference previous section pertaining to animal health requirement.) A market animal can only be exhibited in one department. The same animal cannot be exhibited in both the junior and open show nor can a female market animal be shown in both market and breeding class. When purchasing market animals for exhibition and sale, you must obtain a signed and dated receipt of purchase from the seller. The receipt must include any identification information that is available (for example, birth date, ear notch, etc.). If needed at a later date, the burden of ownership proof will be on the exhibitor and will include an original receipt of purchase. Home raised animals need to be able to present records of ownership and identification information (See IAFE National Code of Show Ring Ethics on page 7). An exhibitor cannot show an animal that was entered or exhibited by another person except in the case of an unforeseen circumstance (sickness, injury, etc.) If possible, substitute exhibitor should be a relative or same club/FFA member and changes must be previously confirmed with UW Extension agent. Also, an exhibitor must be recognized as a member of an acknowledged Fond du Lac County Organization. All animals being shown must be able to walk in a normal fashion, or they will not be allowed to be exhibited or sold in the market livestock sale. All market and breeding animals must have proper care for the duration of the Fair. If the barn superintendent rules that animals are not being adequately cleaned, fed, bedded, or cooled, a warning to the exhibitor will be given. A second violation of this rule will result in loss of fair premiums and the privilege to participate in the market animal sale for the subsequent year. The superintendent and a member of the Fair Board will rule on second offenses. All decisions will be final. Exhibitors are expected to keep all walking alleys and feed areas clean and to keep trash or other foreign material out of manure piles. All exhibitors and their parents or guardians must sign a form attesting to proper withdrawal of all additives and injections administered to the animals being shown. Any questionable carcass
