SWARTLEYGALLERY Dwight-Englewood School 14 Where Art and Artists Flourish Swartley Gallery is a place where student and alumni artists show work and share ideas. “Off the Wall” Exhibit Showcases Works by Young Alumni Vivid, conceptual influences of street art were noted by visitors to “Off the Wall,” a special exhibit featuring works by young D-E alumni earlier this year in D-E’s Swartley Gallery. The artists “have been influenced by the urban landscape and culture that swirls around and within each of them,” according to Visual Arts Department Chair Gregg Emery, who curated the show. Pieces by Joshua Williams ’02, Geobany “Bowz” Rodriguez ’00, and Veronique “Acet” Broussard ’00 leveraged digitally manipulated work, stencils, grafitti, and more traditional approaches to painting and drawing on rather untraditional surfaces. Emery noted in his exhibit remarks that “(All) use their personal, creative voices to speak their mind, share their story and make their individual mark upon the collective consciousness of this world on a local and global level.” Alumni Designers Share Ideas, Experience Erica Sellers ’08 and Seung Paik ’99 stopped by the Swartley Gallery recently to share their work with D-E students. Sellers is a junior at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and Seung graduated from RISD and has worked as a designer for lead corporate brands including Reebok, Nike, and Under Armour, to name a few. Visual Arts Chair Gregg Emery noted, “These young D-E alumni graciously contributed their time to visit our Innovative Design, AP Portfolio, and AP Studio Art classes. Our students were excited to have this chance to benefit from their expertise, viewpoints, and wonderful personalities.” Works by alumni artists were featured at the “Off the Wall” exhibit, showcasing urban-inspired themes and media. Donation.” won Best in Show at this year’s Senior Spotlight exhibit. Senior Art Spotlighted This year’s Senior Spotlight Exhibit featured painting, sculpture, and mixed media by students Jenny Lee ’11, Eunice Her ’11, Hadar Naftalovich ’11, and Katie Yook ’11.
