Wattles: “A recent tribute was posthumously paid to Walter for being the biggest fundraiser for the Highland- Cashiers Hospital. For 40 summers, we loved having family and friends at our second home we built at Highland, NC. Walter’s love of the area was the impetus for his raising over three million dollars for its hospital. In grateful appreciation, the hospital recently mounted a sizeable bronze plaque in Walter’s likeness on their wall.” D 37 Class Rep: Alleyne Mathews Tanham One Washington Square Village West Building, Apt. However, she thinks of Dwight (now Dwight-Englewood) School often. She wonders who is left from the noble class? She is still influenced by all she learned and “observed” while at Dwight…and she loved her one year as a faculty member! E 40 Class Rep needed: Don Coffman reports that he is retired and has outlived his IRA…that’s the best he could do. He and Gloria just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary! D 42 & E 42 Class Reps needed: Dorothy Matheis Thornhill and husband Arthur Thornhill Jr. both remember their great undergraduate days side by side on E. Palisade Avenue! All the children are in good health and lots of fun: Stuart II is in Broom County, NY; Jane is in Princeton, NJ; and Mary Croft is in Portland, OR. She feels lucky to have good health and 66 years of marriage. She remembers that Miss Leggett came to their wedding on February 8, 1944! E 43 Class Rep: Haydock H. Elizabeth Quarles Ryden has been living in a long-term retirement home, Casa Dorinda, for almost 10 years. While Santa Barbara, CA, is a beautiful location, she misses old friends in Scottsdale, St. Louis, and Englewood. Her husband, Reinhardt A. Ryden, died last year after three years of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in the Medical Center. She would love to hear from anyone old enough to remember her! Please call her at 821-969-8181. Bob spends most of his time writing poetry, enjoying music, and in his spare time relaxing using meditation. Except for running into Frank Sparrow in Korea during the war, he really has not seen any of the whole bunch. Don says he “continues to reside in Spring Lake caring for my wife, Amy, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Both Doug Ix and George Gallup helped me celebrate my 80th in June. Where are you all? I am here in Westport, CT, cozily ensconced in what’s left of the shredding safety net for elderly/disabled citizens. Thank you, Eleanor Roosevelt and Francis Perkins, may they not have to roll over in their graves! The growing numbers of us who are disengaged from the stock-marketeer class continually thank them and at the same time fear for our children and grandchildren. Yes, I am an active progressive (turned poet), retired reluctant salesperson, who is able, at last, to think about the world outside of being anxious for my own personal morrow. I want to do something about it and am trying to steepen my own learning curve in that regard. Anyone else? A subsequent long-distance exchange of correspondence (and stamps) with Pitcairn’s postmaster advanced my interest and a lecture by Irving Johnson of Yankee fame that highlighted diving for Bounty relics firmly established Pitcairn as my lifetime travel priority. Not too long ago, on the way from Santiago to Papeete, I had a chance to spend a brief sojourn on ’my’ island. I could have stayed a month; it thoroughly exceeded my expectations. Subsequently, at auction, I acquired a piece of the Bounty’s English oak hull, suitably charred from when the mutineers burned their ship to avoid detection. One could underestimate the power available to the teachers of young boys. ESB had some outstanding teachers.” From Marshall Umpleby: “Mimi and I will celebrate our 50th anniversary in March with a trip to the big island of Hawaii, along with daughters Sarah and Amy plus their partners. We continue to volunteer for the Ashland Independent Film Festival and for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which broke its all-time record for ticket sales, 450,000-plus, for the second year in a row. We recently flew to California, visiting Amy in Nevada City and Sarah in San Diego. From there we took a train to Santa Barbara for the International Film Festival, then another train to Emeryville, where my nephew, a professor of philosophy at Cal, and his family live. In place of grandchildren we have three grand ferrets, four grand horses, a grandnephew and grandniece. Life is good!” Spring 2011 45
