HEAD’SSERIES
Celebrating Exceptional Arts Professionals:
2010–2011 Head of School Series
The D-E Head of School Series
continues to showcase
exceptional professionals in
the performing arts. This academic
year the series featured special new
events, including a film screening
and a discussion with the director
of the National Counterterrorism
Center, Michael Leiter ’87.
Head of School Dr. Rodney De Jarnett,
who initially envisioned and then
launched the program in 2008, noted,
“Our 2010–2011 Series has further
established D-E as a vibrant center
for intellectual and cultural learning at
all levels.”
The School’s resident professional
chamber ensemble, 315 East, kicked
off this year’s series in the fall with a
program called “From Vienna to Prague.”
The concert included works by Mozart
and Dvorak, and a stirring trio for cello,
flute, and piano by Bohuslav Martinu.
Next in the series was “Reel Music:
Sounds of Cinema,” presented in
November by Jazz Vistas, D-E’s resident
professional jazz ensemble, with jazz
adaptations of music featured in movies,
including Lolita, Spike Lee’s Do The
Right Thing, and The Man with the
Golden Arm.
In January, Jazz Vistas presented “From
Boogaloo to the Beatles,” an electrifying
performance inspired by music from the
1960s. The concert was appealing to
both Woodstock-era fans and classic jazz
lovers. Among pieces performed were
adaptations of the Beatles’ “Come
Together”; John Coltrane’s “26-2”; “Time
of the Season” by the Zombies; Jefferson
Airplane’s “White Rabbit”; and “Do Right
315 East: A Chamber Ensemble performing at Schenck Auditorium earlier this year.
