The milestones just kept coming
this winter for miler Olivia Guidera
’11, who made D-E School history
in February by becoming the first Dwight-
Englewood athlete to medal in a State
Group championship. In the Non-Public
B Girls 1600-meter run, Olivia made a
final lap charge, sweeping past her four
opponents for a finish that took sixth
place in the race, knocked six seconds
off her best time, and qualified her for
the NJ Indoor State Meet of Champions.
Earlier in the season, Olivia won the
1600-meter race at the North Jersey
Track and Field Championship at the
Rothman Center of Farleigh Dickinson
University. It marked the first time since
1992 that a Dwight-Englewood athlete
won a winter track varsity event.
While her individual achievements are
impressive, Olivia is very much a team
player and team leader. A four-year
starter for the varsity field hockey team,
she served as captain in 2009 and 2010
and received league and county honors.
Deflecting praise, she notes, “The D-E
coaches are great. They help to build
teams that are very close, amidst
players with many different perspectives.
At the same time, we have fun, and
[with their guidance], we see that we all
bring a different strength to the table.”
Off the track and field, Olivia is copresident
of the D-E Gay Straight Alliance
Club (GSA), a member of the Yearbook
staff, and a student with environmental
science aspirations.
This year she is enrolled in Honors
Chemistry and Honors Biology classes,
and she also enjoys AP Environmental
Sciences with D-E Upper School Science
faculty member Don McNeil, whom she
describes as “awesome.” Her Senior
Focus Project is concentrated on the
critical environmental issue of water
safety, in part based on a service project
she did in Thailand several years ago.
