REUNION2011 Dwight-Englewood School 16 Save the Date! June 3–5 is our 2011 Reunion and Commencement Weekend at Dwight-Englewood School. For Dwight School, Englewood School for Boys, and D-E School graduates from class years ending in 1 and 6, milestone year celebrations are also planned. A Reunion Preview This year’s Reunion includes a “Jazz Rock Jam” featuring Jazz Rock alumni and current instrumental students, and directed by Rob DeBellis; a Leggett Hall room dedication ceremony commemorating 40+ years of service of retiring English Department faculty member Frimi Sagan; and the traditional Reunion Soiree “under the tent” on Leggett Field. Special Honorees During the Reunion, Head of School Dr. De Jarnett will be joined by special presenting guests to honor Robert Bakish ’81 and Karl Zimmermann ESB ’61, winners of the 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award. Bob Bakish is president and CEO of Viacom International Media Networks. He will also be the graduation speaker for the Class of 2011 on Sunday, June 5. (See profile on page 4.) A writer, photographer, and lecturer, Karl Zimmermann is the author or co-author of 23 books. He has been published in magazines, with stories appearing in Travel & Leisure, Gourmet, Trains, Classic Trains, Americana and Passenger Train Journal (he served as contributing editor to both), Cruise Travel, Bon Appetit, Locomotive & Railway Preservation, and many others. He is also a frequent contributor to the travel sections of newspapers across the country including the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, and
Chicago Sun-Times. On the web, Zimmermann has written a monthly column, “All Aboard!,” for trains.com and feature articles and news for expedia.com. He is an accomplished photographer; many hundreds of his photographs are in print—in both his own books and others, and in the aforementioned magazines and newspapers. After concluding a 25-year career as teacher and administrator in independent schools, including director of development at ESB and D-E from 1965 to 1978, Zimmermann began in 1990 an ongoing relationship with Browning Associates, a consulting firm that specializes in counseling schools on development and related matters. Zimmermann has served as lecturer, study leader, and tour host aboard the GrandLuxe Express and for Smithsonian Associates and the Society of International Railway Travelers. The School will also recognize the 2011 inductees into the D-E Athletic Hall of Fame. Baseball, basketball, and football player Robert Brisk ’76, is a former faculty member and served as Upper School principal at D-E from 1980 to 1999. Susan Brisk Sharp D ’71 earned multiple varsity letters and was the 1971 MVP in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse. Don’t Miss It! Leggett-Umpleby Society Formed The Alumni Relations Council is very pleased and proud to announce the founding of the Leggett-Umpleby Society, a group for alumni and alumnae of the Dwight School, the Englewood School for Boys and eventually the Dwight-Englewood School who have reached their 50th Reunion. If you graduated 50 years ago or more, you are automatically a member and invited to attend the Society’s events. According to Co-chairs Nancy Robin Jaicks D ’55 and Armand Pohan ESB ’60, the purpose of this society is to provide occasions for alumni and alumnae to gather and connect with each other. Whether these gatherings are centered on art, music, or education, you can be sure they will provide an opportunity to learn as well as spend time with old and new friends. The first event for the Leggett-Umpleby Society was a reception on April 8 in Hulst House prior to this year’s final Head of School Series concert by 315 East, our resident professional chamber ensemble. Approximately 25 members of the Society were in attendance and enjoyed the reception with Dr. De Jarnett before the concert. As part of Reunion Weekend, Society members are invited to enjoy a dinner cruise around Manhattan, which is being sponsored by Co-Chair Armand Pohan.
