Degree Credits Required For Graduation: 65.5 A Diverse Health Professional Medical assisting is a multi-skilled health profession. Working mainly in medical offices and clinics, medical assistants are essential members of the health care team. Medical assistants often have the administrative responsibilies of recieving patients in a professional and friendly manner, and performing a variety of office duties and public relation tasks. They may also have the clincial duties of helping patients prepare for examinations, assisting the doctor, cleaning and sterilizing instruments and equipment, and being ready to help in emergency situations. What can I expect? To earn your diploma in Medical Assisting, you will complete 12 months of hands on, interative training. You will take classes in medical terminology, pharmacology, keyboarding, clinical office procedures, and more! We also require two months of supervised externship. For an Associate of Applied Science degree, you will complete 16 months of training and twomonths of externship. The externship will give you the chance to observe a health care facility in action, and understand the “big picture” of a medical assistant’s many responsibilities. You will also have the opportunity to build working relationships with co-workers and practise your technical skills. After completion of this program you will be eligible to take a na tion al certifying examination. Careers Medical assistants make up the largest of all the allied health oc cu pa tions. Virtually every practicing physician employs at least 1-3 medical assistants. Medical as sis tants work in hos pi tals, public health, lab o ra to ries, medical schools, insurance companies, re search institutions, voluntary health agencies and other allied health facilities. There also are op por tuni ties with federal agencies such as the Veterans Admin is tra tion, the U.S. Health Service or armed forces clinics and hospitals. Did you know - over 70% of objective clinical data that physicians use to determine treatment comes from tests that medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) perform on patient samples? An MLT might also type and crossmatch blood for transfusion, perform clincial analysis and cell counts on blood, analyze urine, bacteria and blood cells under the microscope, and measure chemicals in blood and body fluids.
