Practical Nursing 11 Months – Credits Required For Graduation: 48.5 Associate Degree of Nursing - 9 Additional Months Is Nursing for You? Nursing—few career fields are as rewarding—or as challenging. Nurses use the latest medical technology at the direct and critical level of patient care. The best nurses are also responsible, compassionate, and ultimately motivated by a sincere desire to help people. What can I expect? As a student in the LATI Practical Nursing program, you can expect to gain theory and practical experience in the care of obstetrical, pediatric, medical, psychiatric, surgical and ge ri at ric patients. 1+1 Program Lake Area Technical Institute and the University of South Dakota have cooperated to offer a 1 + 1 Nursing pro gram. This program offers you the choice of becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and/ or a Registered Nurse (RN). During your first year, you will learn the skills of a practical nurse. You may choose to exit the pro gram after eleven months or apply for admission to the USD Distance Learning program. If you have already earned your LPN licensure, you can apply for admission directly into the second year. Pre req ui sites for second-year students are Anatomy, Algebra, Psy chol o gy and Freshman Composition. The completion of four credits of college chemistry is highly encouraged. Graduates of the 1 + 1 program are eligible to write the National Licensure Exam to earn the title of LPN and/or RN. 1+3 Program Lake Area Tech and Mount Marty College have cooperated to offer a 1+3 Nursing program. This program offers LPN students the choice of articulating Practical Nursing credits to Mount Marty College to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Acceptance Criteria Admission is competitive. Acceptance is based on: • Kaplan Score • GPA - Most recent GPA of 3.0 or better. Completed admission files will be reviewed for acceptance shortly after the deadline for admission. Applicants will be notified of acceptance or denial by letter. The top 48 students are accepted for admission. Deadline to Apply for Fall Semester 2012 Application Fee and Kaplan Nursing School Entrance Exam – December 15, 2011 for fall 2012 classes. Transcripts – December 30, 2011, 12:00 noon. Careers Employment of nurses is expected to increase much faster than average for all occupations in response to the health care needs of a growing and aging population. Nursing education offers employment opportunities in hos pi tals, long-term care facilities, clinics, assisted living facilities and community health locations. In addition, nurses are becoming increasingly in volved in patient home care. What is Occupational Therapy? Occupational Therapy promotes health by enabling people to fully engage in the activities of life. Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) help people overcome physical, mental, and emotional barriers to meaningful, daily occupations. When helping their clients, OTAs commonly use what is individually familiar and enjoyable to teach injury prevention, improve functional ability, and adapt equipment/ environment to improve quality of life. Our fully accredited 20 month program will prepare you to work in a variety of community and health care settings. What can I expect? As a student of this program, you will recieve the best in current OTA training, including lecture, lab experience, discussion, demonstration and off-site fieldwork experiences. Satisfactory completion of this program requires that the individual maintain a 2.0 GPA and complete all course work with a grade of C or higher (one grade of D will be allowed in a general or related course). Graduates of this accredited program are eligible to take the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant administered by the National Board of Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of the exam, the graduate will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). Most states also require licensure to practice. Typically licensure is based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Exam. Completed applications are processed as they are received. Your application will not be processed until it is complete, or contains: • $20 application fee, official high school transcript or GED certificate. • Official transcripts from any post-secondary work (if any). • ACT or compass scores • A writing sample (contact admissions or the OTA faculty for more info). • We also recommend that you have experience observing an OT or OTA. Class size will be limited to 22 students per year. Applicants should be aware that this is an academically intense curriculum. Accreditation Lake Area Technical Institute is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission, a Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The OTA program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220, 301-625- 2682. Be advised that students graduating from an unaccredited program are not eligible to take the NBCOT Certification Exam. In addition, a felony conviction may affect an individual’s eligibility to sit for the national exam and/or obtain state licensure. LATI is an open admissions technical institute.
