SaBRE, Supporting Britain’s Reservists and Employers
is the organisation set up by the Ministry of Defence
to help employers understand the role of Reservists
and the contribution they make to civilian businesses
– and to help the Reserve Forces understand
employers’ concerns. If someone in your organisation
goes forward for deployment SaBRE will be your point
of contact for information and support.
Here in the North West Steve Wotherspoon is
SaBRE’s Campaign Director, providing a vital link
between employers and Reservists via personal contact
and a programme of briefing events. His ambition is
always to minimise any inconvenience to employers.
No two businesses are alike so the personal touch is
all important, whether that is established by phone, at
one of our briefings or face to face.

As soon as you are aware of an
impending mobilisation you should
inform your employer.
Your employer should also receive
an information pack, which sets out
the date and possible duration of your
mobilisation as well as their statutory
rights and obligations and how to
apply for financial assistance. Both
Reservist and employer have the right
to apply for exemption or deferral of
mobilisation under certain exceptional
circumstances.
If your civilian salary is greater than
your military one, you will be able to
claim the difference. You can also claim
for the loss of any benefits such as a
company car or private health insurance.

in terms of leadership, planning and
training, others and that these skills can
be put to good use on return.
They have also commented on
the resilience, stress and technical
management skills their Reservist
employees have gained. So take time
out to talk to your employer before
returning to work and ensure your
employer understands and values your
new skills, they can be of great benefit in
the workplace.
Your employer can apply for financial
costs towards the cost of any retraining
you might need and so it is vital both
parties are open with one another.
