<strong>Helicopter</strong> <strong>guidelines</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>land</strong> <strong>seismic</strong> & <strong>helirig</strong> <strong>operations</strong><br />

Notes:<br />

The international Civilian Aviation Organization (ICAO) defines a hostile environment as an environment in which:<br />

1. A safe <strong>for</strong>ced <strong>land</strong>ing canot be accomplished because the surface is inadequate (inadequate surface would include moderate &<br />

steep slopes and trees); or<br />

2. The helicopter occupants cannot be adequately protectedfrom the elements; or<br />

3. Search and rescue response capability is not provided consistent with anticipated exposure; or<br />

4. There is an unacceptable risk of endangering persons or property on the ground.<br />

ICAO definition of a ‘safe <strong>for</strong>ced lainding’: An ìunavoidable <strong>land</strong>ing or ditching with a reasonable expenctance of no injury to persons in<br />

the aircraft or on the surface.<br />
