International Association of Oil & Gas Producers B.4 Inspection schedule B.4.1 B.4.2 B.4.3 Daily or when used: All lifting equipment (cables, straps, baskets, swivels, clevises, carousels, bag runners, etc.) should be visually inspected by the operator’s appropriately qualified personnel each day or shift when in use. Equipment that remains overnight in the field should be inspected on first occasion on return to base camp or staging area. These inspections will be documented and will record any equipment removed from service. Periodic: A complete inspection for damage shall be periodically performed on all lifting equipment by an operator’s appropriately qualified personnel or a person/ organization approved in accordance with recognized standards, and detailed records should be maintained for that inspection. 1. Periodic inspection intervals shall not exceed one (1) year. The frequency of these inspections should be based on a. Frequency of equipment use. b. Severity of service conditions. c. Nature of lifts being made. d. Experience gained on the service life of slings used in similar circumstances. 2. Guidelines for inspection time intervals are a. Normal service (use of loads within the rated load) – annually. For equipment in constant use, it is recommended these inspections be done every six (6) months. b. Severe service (normal service coupled with abnormal operating conditions) – monthly to quarterly, depending on conditions and use. Any signs of wear beyond established limits, fraying, bird-caging, corrosion, kinks, or deterioration should result in those items being rejected for further use. Discoloration of synthetic materials should be investigated as this could be a sign of chemical contamination or overheating, causing weakening of the materials. Synthetic materials may be damaged from mud, UV radiation, and cuts/nicks from sharp edges. B.5 Steel cable, synthetic (e.g. Kevlar, Spectra, AmSteel Blue), or wire rope slings B.5.1 B.5.2 B.5.3 B.5.4 Each cable or sling should be embossed with the length, diameter and rated strength (WLL) of the line. Inspect cables and slings according to the original manufacturer’s recommended program (or as outlined in paragraphs B.4.1 and B.4.2) prior to use, checking for broken strands, bird caging or kinks, or chemical contamination. Slings should be maintained in accordance with a suitable servicing schedule (or as outlined in paragraph B.4.2) that documents current and traceable load test certification. Nylon straps or netting: only certified straps and netting may be used to connect the load to the steel cable. Nylon or polypropenol ropes should not be used in place of the steel cable, due to the hazards associated with stretch and elastic failure when carrying loads. 48 © OGP
Helicopter guidelines for land seismic & helirig operations B.6 Shackles and swivels B.6.1 B.6.2 The shackles and swivels used to connect the cable to the aircraft are to conform to specific aircraft flight manual regarding the diameter of the shackle rings and their use with respective hook types on the aircraft. Shackles and swivels will be serviceable with no evidence of corrosion or excessive wear. B.7 Unserviceable lifting equipment B.7.1 B.7.2 Worn, damaged and unserviceable lifting equipment should be removed from service and have a quarantine area separate from serviceable equipment. Unserviceable equipment should be tagged, and clearly marked as unserviceable.
