[CULANA] Anaerobic Cult & Gram Stain
SPECIMEN REQUIRED: Specimens are best collected by aspiration or
biopsy. Collection by swab only may limit the recovery of
anaerobes. Collect the specimen in an anaerobe transport tube
or container and transport to the Micro Lab as soon as possible.

ABCESS/BODY FLUID: Aspirate with sterile needle and syringe.
Express all air bubbles from the syringe, remove needle and
cap syringe tightly
PERCUTANEOUS TRANSTRACHEAL ASPIRATION OR BIOPSY: Submit in
appropriate anaerobic transport container
TISSUE: Place in appropriate anaerobic transport container
URINE, BLADDER/SUPRAPUBIC: Submit in syringe with all air
bubbles expressed. Remove needle and cap syringe tightly
WOUND: Cleanse wound with sterile water or saline and
sterile guaze to remove excess exudate. Use an anaerobic
culturette to SWAB DEEPLY. Re-insert swab into plastic
sleeve
SPECIAL HANDLING: To assure anaerobic conditions, carefully
follow directions provided on anaerobic transport system.
TEST INCLUDES: If raw specimen is submitted, gram stain is
performed
TEST AVAILABILITY: Set up daily
TURNAROUND TIME: 120 hours
CLINICAL INFORMATION: The following specimens are not suitable
for anaerobic culture: fecal specimens, throat & nasopharyngeal
specimens, sputum and bronchoscopic specimens, vaginal and
cervical swabs, voided or catheterized urines.
