[CULANA] Anaerobic Cult & Gram Stain<br />

SPECIMEN REQUIRED: Specimens are best collected by aspiration or<br />

biopsy. Collection by swab only may limit the recovery of<br />

anaerobes. Collect the specimen in an anaerobe transport tube<br />

or container and transport to the Micro Lab as soon as possible.<br />

Source:<br />

ABCESS/BODY FLUID: Aspirate with sterile needle and syringe.<br />

Express all air bubbles from the syringe, remove needle and<br />

cap syringe tightly<br />

PERCUTANE<strong>OU</strong>S TRANSTRACHEAL ASPIRATION OR BIOPSY: Submit in<br />

appropriate anaerobic transport container<br />

TISSUE: Place in appropriate anaerobic transport container<br />

URINE, BLADDER/SUPRAPUBIC: Submit in syringe with all air<br />

bubbles expressed. Remove needle and cap syringe tightly<br />

W<strong>OU</strong>ND: Cleanse wound with sterile water or saline and<br />

sterile guaze to remove excess exudate. Use an anaerobic<br />

culturette to SWAB DEEPLY. Re-insert swab into plastic<br />

sleeve<br />

SPECIAL HANDLING: To assure anaerobic conditions, carefully<br />

follow directions provided on anaerobic transport system.<br />

TEST INCLUDES: If raw specimen is submitted, gram stain is<br />

performed<br />

TEST AVAILABILITY: Set up daily<br />

TURNAR<strong>OU</strong>ND TIME: 120 hours<br />

CLINICAL INFORMATION: The following specimens are not suitable<br />

for anaerobic culture: fecal specimens, throat & nasopharyngeal<br />

specimens, sputum and bronchoscopic specimens, vaginal and<br />

cervical swabs, voided or catheterized urines.<br />

TUBE OR CONTAINER: Sterile container<br />

SPECIAL HANDLING: Additional fluid, up to 30 ml, may be<br />

required if other tests are also ordered<br />

ORDERING MODULE: MIC<br />

SPECIMEN VOLUME: 30 mL<br />

MINIMUM VOLUME: 10 mL<br />

TEST INCLUDES: BAL quantitative culture and gram stain<br />
