SPECIMEN REQUIRED:
Non-vascular catheters: Submit two inches of non-vascular
catheter tip in a sterile container.
Note: Culture of different parts of a device require
different containers for each portion to be culutured.
(Foley catheter specimens are NOT acceptable & will be
rejected. Central line catheters may be submitted as a
"Culture,Cath Tip" CULCVP)
Other devices: Submit only the portion of the device that
needs to be cultured. A screw-cap sterile container is
generally an acceptable container.
TUBE OR CONTAINER: Sterile container
(Swabs are inappropriate collection devices for this test.)
TEST AVAILABILITY: Daily
TURNAROUND TIME: 72 hours
METHODOLOGY: Culture
CLINICAL INFORMATION: Indicate source (type of device part or
catheter) on requisition.
REFERENCE RANGE: No growth after 3 days
[CULDIAL] Dialysate Culture Protocol
SPECIMEN REQUIRED: Body fluid
TUBE OR CONTAINER: Isolator AND Red
SPECIAL HANDLING: Collect body fluid with sterile needle and
syringe. Aseptically deliver into a 10 mL
isolator tube. Submit remaining 10 mL body
fluid in a red-stopper 10 mL vacutainer tube.
ORDERING MODULE: MIC
SPECIMEN VOLUME: 20 mL
MINIMUM VOLUME: 10 mL
TEST INCLUDES: Gram stain, aerobic culture, KOH prep, and
fungal culture
TEST AVAILABILITY: Daily
TURNAROUND TIME: 5 days for final (including fungal culture)
REFERENCE RANGE: No growth
