SPECIMEN REQUIRED: Refrigerated whole blood
TUBE OR CONTAINER: Dark Green (heparin)
SPECIAL HANDLING: Place specimen on ice immediately after
collection:
If cells are to be washed at Mayo (Mon-Thur
only), LabCorp must ship refrigerated whole
blood sample direct to Mayo to ensure sample
arrives within 48 hours of collection. If unable
to ship within 24 hours of collection,
please order PORPRBCW and send washed RBC's.
SPECIMEN VOLUME: 5 mL (whole blood)
MINIMUM VOLUME: 3 mL (whole blood)
TEST INCLUDES: Total porphyrins represented mostly by protoporphyrins
and zinc protoporphyrins. Includes any
coproporphyrins and uroporphyrins if present.
TEST AVAILABILITY: Monday-Thursday
TURNAROUND TIME: 3-4 days
REFERENCE RANGE: < 80 mcg/dL packed cells
METHODOLOGY: Spectrofluorometric
REFLEX TEST INFORMATION: If the total RBC porphyrin value is >80
mcg/dL, additional testing
(fractionation assays) will be
performed at an additional charge
