San Diego packet radio is getting organized. By the time you read this,
a new organization will have been formed: SANDPAC, the San Diego Packet
Microlog has announced the ART-I. Like t he PK-64, the ART-l is clos ely
tied to the Commodore 64 or 128 computer. AEA has announced the PK-232 ,
whi ch talks RS-232 to any computer whil e still wo r king a l l modes. The
Catches: Microlog doesn't have t he packet op t i on r eady for the ART-I, and
AEA hasn't announced price or availabili t y on the PK- 232.
Automatic message forwarding is coming t o t he west coast. They 've been
doing it for a while in the e a st. The idea is that the packet mailboxes
learn how t o talk to each other . I can send a message to a distant ham by
simply placing it on the local mail box. The mailboxes will pass the mess
age among themselves until it gets to the mailbox that ham checks into.
This is a very powerful way to build a networ k . It'll be neat when it
comes to California. Watch this space .
Many of the f iles that are available on packet mailboxes show up on the
Night OWl BBS a t 279- 3921 . If you have a modem but are still wishing for a
packet TNC, cal l up Night OWl ( 24 hours, 300/1200).
