Tha nks to all, and to Vina de Montegre, who is so faithful in picking up t he key and opening the hall. de Pat , N6INN DOWN THE TOOBE Be sure to l et Glendale Fed know that we a ppreciate the use of their hal l for our meetings a nd the VE Program. We l come back to Franci s, W60MM, who has r eturne d t o the area a nd Cl ub. Last month we received, and promptly mis placed, a ni c e note a nd pict ures from Leona , WA60HB , tell ing u s that their boat Malaga had mis sed bei ng damaged in t he Mexico City quake. Both she a nd OM Carl are accredited examiners under SANDARC-VEC, and have bee n giving exams in Me xico to h am ~ upgrading or t o prospective hams. Leona sent along PARC dues for Carl. A littl e early, Le ona , but better t hat than t oo l ate . For e veryone 's inf o, all me mbe rships expi re on July 31 , s o we all need to regnu p r i o r to t hat. Bob , WA6QQQ , r eports the FCC has approved unatt ended operation o f d igi tal repeaters above 50 mHz , but reminds that if third part y t r a f fic is handled , the repeater must be attended by a contro l op. Congratula t ion s to Buc k, KAORGQ, and to Betty, KB6DGR , both of whom ha ve up-graded to Ge neral Clas s . You' l l notic e , this month, that we're finishing off t he Scope wi t h a d i gita l c ommuni cations column, Bytes 'n Pieces , by Paul Williams on, KBS MU. Paul put our packet digipeater on t he mountain a nd a nd is prof essionally employed in a compute r-r elated line of work. His column was , appropria t e ly, sent to the Scope via packet radio - letter perfect , in a matter of seconds. Tha nks Paul , and we're looking forward to mo r e of t he s ame (maybe you 'll ans we r a l l o f my questions and I won't HAVE to read t he book whe n a l l e l se f ails!) . To the newl y initiated, packet radio certainly appears to be booming . I t ' s amazing to watch t he activity on t he pac ket cha nnels t hat Pa u l talks about i n his c o l umn. The ease and accuracy of communications makes i t fascinating t o operate, and the flexibility and op t i ons available to the ope r ator (or listener ) gives one many choices of ope rating parameters . I -ve s tarted out just as Paul indicates, with a C- 64 a nd a PK-64 TNC and I' m having a ball ! I t DOES help to be able to type, though as the c omputer s t a lk to each other SO quickly that you're soo n looking for more to s a ~ . Onc e t he framework is in place for formal message t raffi c , it will cer talnly improve the amateur message handling capability - part icul arl y where hi gh volume emergency t raffi c needs to be moved. I highly r ecommend SCOPE - February '86 Page 6
