ANNUAL PICNIC IN BRENGLE PARK ON AUGUST 24 Brengle Park is in Vista about a mile east of Vista Way on Vale Terrace, Vale Terrace is just across Vista Way from Glendale Fed. PARC will be at the east end of the park. As in recent years, the picnic will be a pot luck affair with surnames starting with A through L bringing a meat or casserole dish and M through Z bringing a salad. Lunch will be at 1200 and the drawing at 1300 or after lunch. The picnic will start at 1000. Prizes have not been announced yet so you'll just have to wait and see. Plan now to come out and win the KWM-380, or Globe Chief, as the case may be. Get your tickets for the drawing at the August club meeting or the picnic. You, or your agent, must put your tickets in the hopper. JULY CLUB MEETING At the July club meeting, we heard the minutes of the previous meeting; and the Treasurer's and various committee reports. Phil Leonelli, WF6L, gave us a most interesting demonstration of his electronic one-man band. We had a great time socializing to Phil's music. A very nice evening with more than the usual chance to meet and talk to folks. Wonderful no-cal goodies and coffee by Vina and company. Somebody brought some GREAT cake (I hope it was no-cal!!). EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING The Executive Committee meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30 of the p.m. Club members are welcome to attend and observe. Contact club officer for the location of the meeting. At the July meeting W9FQN informed the Committee that the ARRL has designated PARC a Special Service Club, but the correspondence had not yet been received. The Committee voted to spend no more than $225 for picnic prizes due to the unexpected increase in our liability insurance. The continuing problem of KOJPK/R's interfering intrusion into major portions of our coverage area, and correspondence thereto relating were discussed. FIELD DAY We had a dandy time! So did el senor Murphy! The 75M generator quit during the early morning hours and left KA6HZF and his logger, W1LY Coyote, logging by flashlight (thank heavens the rig was battery powered!). 15M was an hour or so late getting under way due to rig problems. The HF packet station never did get things going. N6IE thought for a while that he had a broken wrist (we're glad you're ambidextrous on the keyer Felix). And unexpected family visitations left some of us out of the fray: But a grand time,was had by all. Scores were about like those of last year, but somewhat 1mproved. The beam donated by K6RF and refurbished by KAORGQ performed per specs for the CW station, and Buck's "mobile tower" - a 50 footer! - did its job. The 40M Delta Loop also did its share (maybe that's what we need for 40 CW next year). The guys on 20M really cranked out the contacts and most of us had a look at their computer logging and how i~ simplified dupe checking and logging. VHF packet radio worked fine an~ there was a contact on 10 gHz by WA7GRW, the Amana Kid. Wait'll next year! SCOPE - Aug. '86 Page 2

FROM THE ARRL LETTER Our own Paul Williamson, KB5MU, is the first president of the newly formed San Diego Packet Radio Association (SANDPAC). Yes, we learned it from the ARRL Letter rather than from Paul. The ARRL has filed a petition asking for the immediate opening of the 18.068-18.168 mHz band, and suggested a 1500W PEP output limit with CW throughout the band, RTTY up to 18.110, and phone from there to 18.168. It is not known when the FCC will act on this petition. See September QST. The FCC is proposing licensing fees, but NOT for the Amateur Service. A brand new software package for the C-64, is now available at the AMSAT Software Exchange, P.O. Box 27, Washington, D.C. 20044. It is called Supertrak 64 and includes a highly detailed map display, ground track path, tracking up to 8 of 14 satellites in the menu and autocall of the QUICKTRAK tabular program. ARRL is offering a special comic book-type publication to promote amateur radio among the students of junior high school teachers. Interested teachers may contact the club secretary for specifics.
