Featured Member (Cont. from pg. 9) took us fishing for Marlin. Well---what a time we had! I was fortunate to hook a big―I mean big―Black Marlin. In fact, at 983 lbs., it was the 2nd largest Marlin ever caught in Cabo San Lucas. I wanted to have it mounted and bring it home, but Sue said that it was so big it wouldn’t fit anywhere in the house! So, it is mounted on the wall at Marina Sol Hotel in Cabo. Also, about that time, I wanted to get back into racing cars so I sold the Weissach Coupe to my neighbor and purchased two racing Go Karts for my son and me to race. We had a good time racing for a number of years until I ended up crashing my Kart in practice, up at Jim Hall’s track in Ventura. I ran into the Start Tower and broke six ribs, front and back, broke my collarbone and shoulder blade and punctured my lung. After three days in Intensive Care, 13 days in the hospital and over two months to recover, we sold the Go Karts! All I have left now is a slight twitch―just kidding! After recovering, at the recommendation of my orthopedist, I began competing in Sporting Clay shotgun competitions across California and Nevada and today, in addition, I occasionally compete in Cowboy Action Shooting events. After a short time, I came across a 1965 Shelby GT350 that an acquaintance wanted to sell. I couldn’t resist! We had a great time showing the Shelby at Concours events with much success. About this time my son, Ryan, was able to start driving and of course, he wanted to drive the Shelby. Not! Subsequently, we decided to sell the Shelby and bought a 1965 Mustang Fastback that he and I restored to 1965 Shelby “R” Model racing specifications. During this process, Ryan was still able to drive the Mustang to high Bob and Ryan driving the Cobra and Mustang at Willow Springs in 2007 school! When Ryan went away to college, the Mustang was fitted with a new racing engine and we finished up all the required elements for us to go racing! Since 2000, I have been racing the Mustang and for a short time, a special Shelby Cobra in Vintage events that have been held at Willow Springs, Laguna Seca, Auto Club Speedway, Coronado, Miller Sports Park in Salt Lake City and Hallet Raceway in Tulsa, Oklahoma among others. As many of you know, vintage racing is not all about winning; it is the spirit of competition in vintage cars. In 2005, we decided to take European delivery of a new 2006 BMW 550i, which would become my daily driver. In three years I have put over 80,000 miles on it! What a terrific experience the European delivery is. We toured Germany and Austria for over a week. The autobahn, as many of you know, is great! Also in 2005, after a number of years without a Porsche, I began to look for a suitable replacement. As a result, I found our current car, the Orange 1974 Carrera Coupe, in Pennsylvania. I surprised Sue with a trip to New York City for Valentine’s Day and, oh by the way, we were also going to look at a car near Scranton. The car was everything I was looking for---it was kept inside the owner’s house along with another Porsche. Three other lesser Porsches were relegated to his garage! The car was stunning! It was love at first sight; the deal was made and the car was transported to Southern California shortly thereafter. The Carrera is a matching numbers car with 60,000 original miles and one of only 528 that were imported from Germany. We immediately rejoined the PCA and have thoroughly enjoyed not only meeting so many new friends and Porsche enthusiasts, but the many Orange Coast Region events that we have been able to attend. We have enjoyed showing the car at numerous Bob, Sue, Ryan and Amanda with the Weissach Coupe at an Orange Coast Concours in the 1980s. Region 8 Concours including the 2007 Parade in San Diego and also enjoy the various rallies and driving tours that Armand has set up like Hearst Castle and the recent Monterey Historics cruise up the coast. The competition is great; the roads fantastic and the commaderie, priceless! The experience that Sue and I have had over the last 30+ years with our cars and competing in one form or the other, especially with the six Porsches we have owned (Sue’s favorite of all our cars) has truly been terrific!
