2009 Orange Coast Region Board Member Elections Story by Garey Cooper Your Orange Coast Region (OCR) is in Zone 8 of the Porsche Club of America (PCA). In PCA there are 13 Zones in the United States and Canada, and interestingly there are also 13 Regions in our Zone 8. Each of the Regions has a board of leaders who take their role as volunteers to help organize the Porsche Club activities in their area. Each Region has its own bylaws and, while most are very similar, there are some differences. Our Orange Coast Region has been around for quite a while as an independent car club, and closing in on the half century mark as this year draws to a close. During this time we’ve been very fortunate in that, while from time to time things can get contentious and the economy can vary, there have been people who have been willing to step up and do their part for the enjoyment of their club. This includes both men and women as the club has in the past had at least two female Presidents for the region. The only unifying theme among all of the past and present board members is the desire to play a leading role in the ongoing running of the OCR. The OCR Region is usually the second largest in our Zone; typically San Diego is the largest. And it can be said we are one of the most active Regions, not only in our Zone but in the entire PCA. Just looking at our Calendar should give us all a sense of pride in the dedication of the outgoing Board Members and give us pause to wish the candidates coming in well. After all they are the catalysts that drive the chemistry of our club forward year by year. Our club has a total of seven elected members on the board. They each serve a two-year staggered term, with four elected in one year and three the next, so there is always some overlap to provide continunity in the board. The other board members who fill roles like Pando editor, membership chairman, autocross chairman, etc., may or may not include one of these elected people. The four officers must be elected, according to our bylaws. Each elected member position is held for two years and in a neat piece of symmetry we have four candidates for the four open positions that appear for 2010 and 2011. The general membership elects the Board Members and the ultimate decision on which person fills each executive position is decided by the Board at its monthly meeting following the election. This is in compliance with our current bylaws. This does not preclude anyone voting from expressing an opinion about any one candidate’s ability or aptitude for a specific open position. The open positions for the new year are President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. As President Armand Gastelo is stepping down this year and not running for a new Board Position, Ex Officio by our bylaws, he becomes Past President and will remain in that capacity for the next two years. Our current Vice President, Nicole Boggs is choosing to be re-elected again and she should be familiar to most of our members for having been very active in her past two years. We also have Porsche family members Tom and Phyllis Meng who have been respectively our Secretary and Treasurer for the past two years. They are not running for reelection in this cycle but we certainly do expect to see them around the club for some time to come and thank them for their dedication and assistance while performing their functions. The candidates for the Board this year are: Nicole Boggs. As I mentioned above, our Ms. Boggs has been a bundle of energy and active in Club affairs over the past two years as Vice President of the OCR. Nicole was a Featured Member in the Pandemonium this last year (her husband Cooper is also a part of the picture here). Eric Budai. Eric was also Featured Member this year in the Pando and he and his family appeared on the cover of the September issue. Eric has been active in several areas of club activities, especially in Autocros. He is a friendly face at many club events and would like to “pay back” for the fun he has had as an OCR member by serving on the Board. David Piper. David is an OCR member with a passion for the club and has been very interested in helping us move to the next level. He is interested in a Board position and would like to take up the interests of his fellow members as their representative in the operations of the OCR. He is well versed in the financial aspects that is necessary to a well-run volunteer organization. Gordon Williams. Gordon has been an OCR member for the past three years and has volunteered on occasion to help out in some club events. He has corporate multi-national experience in his business life and would like to be a part of the club going forward at the Board level. Gordon is volunteering to help lead the club into its next half century. The Orange Coast Region needs to acknowledge the contributions of the Nominating Committee for this year’s slate of candidates. These people are Steve Eguina, Fast Freddy Fredrickson and Jerry Muno. Their efforts are appreciated. They are also working on filling other non-elected positions on the board. If you would like to serve, or at least like more information regarding a position on the board, please contact one of these committee members. To close we should note a rather unpleasant fact. That is the number of votes received from the membership at large is usually relatively small. I think that many people look at the names of the candidates and knowing them, are quite happy to vote without returning a ballot, perhaps by “acquiescence.” While this is not a bad thing, it would certainly be refreshing to see the number of returned ballots increase this year, so don’t forget to vote it―only takes a moment!
