Figure 2. Waste Characterization
The International Energy Agency (IEA) classifies waste as follows:
• Biomass – consists of plant matter used directly as fuel, including agricultural
waste (e.g. bagasse), animal materials/wastes, human waste and waste water.
• Municipal solid waste – consists of biodegradable and combustible products
collected from households, industry and tertiary sector by local authorities.
Jamaica’s municipal solid waste includes:
1. Organic or compostable waste – food waste and agricultural waste
2. Paper/Cardboard – newspaper, office paper, journals, magazines, books, bags,
packaging
3. Plastic – bottles, bags, wrapping, packaging, records, compact disks, toys
4. Glass – bottles, scrap, mirrors
5. Metal/Tin – cans, scrap, nails, aluminum, construction scrap, wire, utensils
6. Wood/Board – hardwood, furniture, construction scrap
7. Textiles – fabric, upholstery, sheets, clothes, etc
8. Other: Ceramics (porcelain plates, tiles, fixtures and fittings, tubs), Tires,
Electronics (televisions, component sets, computers, accessories) and
Miscellaneous waste.
Over the past ten years, municipal solid waste deposited at disposal sites has grown by
an annual average rate of 6% per year. It is important to note that the National Solid
Waste Management Authority estimates that 75% of the country’s domestic waste is
collected, while the remainder is uncollected due to inaccessibility, competing disposal
practices and improper waste management practices. Private waste management firms
compete with the National Solid Waste Management Authority by establishing long
term contracts with businesses, hotels and residential complexes for garbage removal.
