• Inaccessible roadways and poor road networks.
• Potential for leachates into the surroundings.
• Informal sorting and recycling practices.
• Spontaneous fires due to the build up of methane.
• Odor from the untreated waste on windy days.
• Stagnant water collection due to the unevenness of the land and improper
drainage system.

It is estimated that approximately 7.45 Mm 3 has been deposited at the site over the
years, but the loss of material in fires is unknown. The management of waste has not
always included the use of a landfill compactor but the density is an estimated range of
0.5 – 0.75 tonnes/ m 3 (Water and Earth Science Associates Ltd. (WESA), 1998).
