It could not have been the great success that it was, without you. We all came away a little bit nore informed and hopefully, each of us took a captive audience home with us. Author Jim Bates is doing his part to foster our sport. He writes a monthly column called "The Rigger's Notebook' for Atlantic F$er. Letters llo The Editor I would like to congratulate PIA on the great sucoessi of the l99l International Parachute Slmposium. Evcrything I have read about the Sprposium looked fantastic. My onlyregret is that MARCH 1991 PARA-NET4/S-BRIEF PAGE # 1
I was not able to attend. I would like to submit an idea that might help the PIA raise money, and help the people who cannot attend future conferences. This would even be useful for attendees, to get ideas from individual seminars they cannot attend. If you would require an outline from people giving each seminar to be eligible to participate, these outlines could be used to write a short paper. The papers could cover the highlights of each semin31. These papers could then be published as the Slmposirrm proceedings. Judsing from the schedule of events I sawin the ChulingStar, this would be veryworthwhile. I would be willing to pay $50 for a book of this tpe. The proceedings would also facilitate one of the goals of the conference: the exchange of knowledge. This is not an original ide4 I can only take credit for applying it to the Symposium. I work in the computer industry, and this is a common practice for national and world wide conferences. Often these proceedings are sold at reduced cost to attendees. I would like to commend everyone who was responsible for putting to gether the 1991 International Sympo sium. Sport parachuting has come of age, and will benefit from the professionalism displayed. Please keep up the good work and make the 193 Symposium even better. I am making plans now, not to mi the neK one. We hope you choose to staywith us! Efficient Fruitake Your "One on One" interviewwith Ret. ArmyGen. RichardThompson(March 12) refers to a l0(lpage specification for fruitcake. The infamous 1977 specification for fruitcakewas 20 pages. One of our Defense Logistics dgency supply activities, the Defense Persormel Support Center (DPSC), buys fruitcake consumed by our military servicemen and women, but it no longeruses a 20- page specification. Instead, since Septcmber 1986, DPSC has purchased fruitcake using avery brief five-page commercial item description. For the past few years, our agency has been working toward procurement reform in every area, particularly in simplifying the process of doing business with us. The changes won't happen overnight we manage a total of 2.9 million - items. Some of the age-old inefficiencies have been difficultto turn around, butwe are making progress. "Niche" Marketeer Grabs Attention with Pair of "Better Mousetraps" ome of the small exhibitors displayed highly inventive products aimed at so-called niche markets. One company that caught AFJI's attention was Parachutes Australia (PA). In developing a mechanical, reusable parachute reefing device, this company has come up with one of those "better mousetraps, " according to a former US airbome soldier who took the time to examine it. According to PA's calculations, if adopted by the US PATRICI.AMILLER Deputy staff director Ofhce of PublicAffairs Defense Logistics AgencY armed forces, the reefer could lead to a saving of $4.S-miltion per year, while giving DoD a very high level of dependability. Another interesting contribution by PA, although still in the developmental stage, is an automatic parachute disconnector that activates after air-dropped cargo lands.
