9.1. Secti<strong>on</strong>s 127-129 of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Local</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Government</str<strong>on</strong>g> Act (Northern Ireland)<br />
1972 c<strong>on</strong>tain powers to enable the Department to supervise how<br />
councils exercise their functi<strong>on</strong>s. Those powers, which have rarely<br />
been used, would enable the Department to:<br />
• require a council to make reports and give informati<strong>on</strong> about the<br />
exercise of its functi<strong>on</strong>s to the Department;<br />
• cause local or other inquiries to be held or investigati<strong>on</strong>s to be<br />
made in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with any matters relating to the functi<strong>on</strong>s of a<br />
council; and<br />
